Watkins putting on a show in Florida state playoffs

The performance that Clemson commitment Sammy Watkins has displayed in the last two weeks in the Florida state playoffs has been remarkable, to say the least. His current playoff run has been as dramatic and show-stopping as an episode of the TV football show, Friday Night Lights.

Two weeks ago, Watkins caught a 72-yard bomb with under two minutes remaining that carried South Fort Myers to a 28-21 victory over Bradenton SE in the Region 3A semi-final. He also had two other scores during that game to single-handedly lead his team to victory.

What would he do for an encore in the Region 3A finals this past weekend?

First off, he scored with a 69-yard touchdown on a fake punt to tie the game at 21-21 with 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Then, with 1 minute left in the game, Watkins fielded the punt at his own 40-yard line and danced by defenders 60-yards for the go-ahead touchdown.

His 3 catches for 110 yards were very impressive due to the fact that he was bracketed and double-teamed the entire night by the opposing team. After one of his catches, he came down with a slight hip injury on the play, but not even this could deter him from helping his team with the win.

“I had to fight through it and I had to step up for the team. I told them to put it all on me and they did,” Watkins told the Fort Myers News-Press .

Watkins has scored eight touchdowns in three playoff games this year and has 2,859 receiving yards for his career.

“He’s the real deal,” Bradenton SE head coach Paul Maechtle told the Fort Myers News-Press.

South Fort Myers improved to 12-0 and advanced to the Class 3A state semifinals Friday against Miami Norland. Norland won their playoff game against Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy 27-23.

One recruiting service rates Watkins as the No.2 wide receiver in the country. Watkins picked the Tigers over Alabama, Florida, Miami, Michigan and North Carolina.
