Waiting Game Continues for Todd McClinton

CLEMSON, SC - The latest update on the continuing saga of Todd McClinton is surprise - no update.

Clemson Chief Public Affairs Officer Cathy Sams said Tuesday the school had yet to receive any information which would shed light on McClinton's attempt to gain eligibility at Clemson University. She also said there is no timetable set to expect a decision either way.

"Right now there's just nothing new to report," she said.

McClinton, the Tigers' 6-foot-6, 250-pound recruit from Columbia's C.A. Johnson High School, is rated as one of the top tight end prospects in the country by several national recruiting services.

Though officials at the school won't say, speculation is that Clemson red-flagged McClinton's second SAT test score because of its dramatic rise over his first attempt. The same rumors have McClinton taking the test for a third time, with he and the school now awaiting those results as the final hurdle for his admission.

Clemson's official policy is to question any test score which rises 300 points or more. Once that happens, the results would be returned to the testing service for validation.

McClinton's mother, reached at their home in Columbia Tuesday afternoon, would not comment on the situation.

Classes begin Aug. 23 at Clemson, though Sams said there is still a window of opportunity following that date for McClinton to be admitted to school.

"The NCAA provides a grace period, though I'm not sure exactly how many days it is right now," Sams said. "But there is some extra time if he can meet all the necessary requirements."

Clemson's season opener is 6 p.m., Sept. 2, when The Citadel visits Death Valley.
