Turnovers and defense lift Tigers past Georgia St. 28-0

by - Senior Writer -

CLEMSON – The good news is that Clemson completed a tune-up for next week’s rivalry game against South Carolina with a rather pedestrian 28-0 victory over outmanned Georgia St. Saturday afternoon on Military Appreciation Day in Death Valley, and did it without suffering any significant injuries.

The bad news? Clemson’s offense continued to struggle and relied on four first half interceptions by Georgia St. to take a 28-0 lead at intermission, but the offense staggered through the second half.

The highlight for the offense was Dye, who became the second Tiger this season to have a 100-yard rushing game ( Wayne GallmanWayne Gallman

has two). Dye carried the ball 20 times for 124 yards, the most yards gained by a Clemson running back this season.

Clemson’s point total was the fewest given up this season by the Panthers, a defense that came into the game giving up an average of 43.8 points per game this season. Cole Stoudt finished the game 19-for-29 for 132 yards with one touchdown and one interception as Clemson's offense gained just 357 total yards.

Clemson's defense gave up just 155 total yards of offense, and the Panthers gained 40 rushing yards on 33 carries.

The first half gave the Clemson offense what seemed like a shot of confidence and saw the emergence of Dye in the first extended action of his Clemson career.

The teams traded early punts, and Stoudt’s afternoon got off to a rocky start when he threw an interception on the second drive of the game. However, the Tigers pinned GSU deep and Dye capped off a 30-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead.

GSU’s Arbuckle threw another interception on the ensuing possession, and it was returned by Korrin WigginsKorrin Wiggins

for 37 yards. Five plays later Dye broke into the end zone from eight yards out and the Tigers had a 14-0 lead.

picked off Arbuckle midway through the second quarter and seven plays later the Tigers got a nine-yard scoring run from Wayne Gallman for a 21-0 lead. GSU’s next possession ended with an interception, this one by senior Garry PetersGarry Peters

that Peters returned 12 yards to the Clemson 47 yard line.

for six yards and a 13-yard Stoudt scamper gave Clemson a first down at the GSU 13 yard line.

Three plays later, Stoudt was able to thread an 8-yard touchdown pass to Williams – with 34 seconds left before halftime – and the Tigers had the 28-0 lead at intermission.

Clemson stumbled through the third quarter and much of the fourth quarter and didn't score any second half points despite playing the starters for much of the half.
