And then there were two.

The nation’s top-rated player and quarterback for the 2018 recruiting cycle (according to 247) tweeted out his top two schools Tuesday evening, with Clemson and Georgia making the cut.

Trevor Lawrence, out of Cartesville (GA) High School, is the darling of the national recruiting services and is already listed as a 5-star by both Rivals and 247. Rivals lists the 6-6, 200-pounder as the top quarterback for the 2018 recruiting cycle.

Lawrence has offers from Alabama, California, Cincinnati, Clemson, Colorado State, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Houston, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Southern Miss, Tennessee, UCF, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and others. His first offer was from Colorado State. Clemson offered last June, and both the Tigers and Bulldogs survived the cut.

TigerNet reached out to Lawrence Tuesday evening after the tweet, and he indicated that Clemson and Georgia are the finalists because of relationships.

“I feel very comfortable at both schools, and that's why they are my top two,” Lawrence told TigerNet. “That my relationship with the coaches from both schools is great.”

Lawrence hasn’t made it a secret that he likes the direction the Tigers are headed – especially on the recruiting trail with several of the nation’s top receivers – and he told TigerNet he wanted to find the best offense that fits his talents.

“I think I can play in both offenses,” Lawrence said. “It’s just finding which one might be a little better for me or which one help me the most will influence my decision."

Lawrence was back on Clemson’s campus in June for head coach Dabo Swinney’s high school camp. That followed a visit to the campus in March in which he spent more time with recruiter and quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter.

"Good visit," Lawrence said. "A lot of stuff academic wise, saw all the facilities again and had some good talks with the coaches. "Coach Streeter and really just the whole staff, they are awesome."

Lawrence plans to visit both schools before the end of the month, but hasn’t announced a timetable for a decision.

Both Clemson and Georgia have talent at the quarterback position on the depth chart and have recruited well. UGA freshman Jacob Eason was one of the top recruits in the 2016 class and was rated as a 5-star player. Clemson has 5-star quarterback Hunter Johnson committed in 2017, as well as 4-star prospect Chase Brice. Former 4-star quarterback Zerrick Cooper enrolled at Clemson over the summer.

The Bulldogs also have a 4-star quarterback pledged for 2017 in Jake Fromm, the nation's No. 5 quarterback and No. 39 overall player, who flipped from Alabama in March.

As a sophomore, Lawrence completed 233 out of 364 passes for 3655 yards with 43 touchdowns and only four interceptions.

As a freshman, he passed for 3,042 yards with 26 touchdowns to lead Cartersville to the AAAA semifinals. As an 8th grader, he had 1173 passing yards with 18 passing touchdowns and nine rushing touchdowns.
