Tigers land 4-star wide receiver |
Clemson’s recruiting is on a roll.
The Tigers picked up commitment number 16 Friday afternoon when 4-star wide receiver Deon Cain gave his verbal commitment during a ceremony at his school. Cain is ranked as the No. 57 player nationally in the ESPN 300, and is ranked as the fifth-best athlete in the nation. He is also listed as the No. 13 player out of the state of Florida. The 6-1, 190-pound prospect – who plays quarterback at Tampa (FL) Tampa Bay Tech - chose the Tigers over Florida, Florida St., Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Miami. Only LSU offered Cain as a quarterback. He is the second receiver picked up for the 2015 cycle, along with Shadell Bell. Cain completed 49 percent of his 245 pass attempts in 2013, throwing for 1,945 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions. "He's probably the most athletic kid I've ever coached," said Jayson Roberts, his high school coach. “The number of things he can do as a receiver, run, jump, I've never seen a kid so comfortable with the ball in the air. He just plucks the ball out of the air. He makes everything look so effortless. He's such a smooth athlete and one of the most competitive kids I've been around." Roberts said that Cain is also the kind of leader the Tigers are looking for. “Those leadership qualities are going to translate well to the next level," Roberts said. "Having that pressure that everything was going to go thru him, playing at Clemson and on that big stage is not going to affect him at all."
