Tigers Rout Temple, 63-9

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - James Davis rushed for three touchdowns and Clemson reached the end zone the first eight times it touched the ball Thursday night, rolling over a mismatched Temple squad, 63-9.

The victory is Clemson's (6-1) fifth straight, and has the Tigers bowl eligible with still five games remaining in the season.

"They did what a great team should, they came out and took care of business," head coach Tommy Bowden said. "They played well and they played smart. I thought it was great they could come out and play in this type of (NFL) environment."

Davis carried just nine times for 138 yards and the three scores, including a 64-yarder in the second quarter. His three touchdown runs give him 14 on the season.

The sophomore alternated possessions with C.J. Spiller for most of the first half, and Spiller did his best to keep up with Davis. The true freshman ran for 73 yards on 12 carries and scored twice, from one and 15 yards away.

The Tigers didn't punt until there were almost nine minutes remaining in the game.

After allowing Temple (0-7) to kick a field goal on its first possession of the game, Clemson's defense put the clamps on the Owls and held them scoreless until early in the fourth quarter when Vaughn Charlton found backup tight end Steve Maneri for a 30-yard touchdown to make it 63-9.

Clemson defensive end Gaines Adams played sparingly in the first half, but was in the game long enough to record his 23rd career quarterback sack. That ties Adams for third on the all-time list at Clemson, behind Micheal Dean Perry (28) and brother William (27).

Quarterback will Proctor, playing just the first half, was 8-of-9 for 151 yards and two touchdowns - one each to Alex Pearson and Jacoby Ford.

Demerick Chancellor, in a mop-up role at running back, ran for 114 yards and the Tigers' final touchdown of the evening. Backup wide receiver Nelson Faerber earlier had recovered teammate Andrew Diamonde's fumble in the end zone for Clemson's first score of the third quarter.

The only trouble spot for the Tigers, again, was kickoff coverage. Clemson allowed Temple two long returns on the evening, one for 50 yards and another for 73.

Clemson returns to action a week from Saturday, hosting Georgia Tech.

"We'll give the players Friday and Saturday off," Bowden said. "The staff will go to work on Georgia Tech (Friday)."
