Tigers Roar Past Terps In College Park, 30-17 |
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - It's only fitting that on the same day the Breeder's Cup was run, Clemson unleashed a couple of mudders on a wet track at Maryland.
James Davis and C.J. Spiller combined for 234 yards, as Clemson ran out to a 30-3 lead over the Terrapins in College Park, winning it 30-17. The game was played before a crowd of almost 51,000.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 6-2, 3-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland falls to 4-4 (1-3).
"When you go on the road in the ACC and have to win, it's difficult to do," Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden said. "(Maryland's) Ralph (Friedgen) is a quality coach and he has a quality staff...He has a lot of injuries. He's kind of going through what we did last year."
Maryland's field, muddied by days of rain, proved to be no trouble for Clemson's running back tandem.
Davis finished the day with 129 yards (29 carries) and a short touchdown run in the second quarter, backing up his guarantee of a win earlier this week. Spiller also broke the century mark, finishing with 106 yards on 17 carries.
The duo ran behind a suddenly rejuvenated offensive line, which performed well Saturday despite the early loss of starting guard Chris McDuffie. McDuffie was one of three Clemson players to leave the game with injuries - the other two being defensive tackle Rashaad Jackson and wideout Jacoby Ford.
Immediate word on the extent of the injuries wasn't known.
"It takes some time when you replace four offensive linemen...You wish you could start out and gain that experience (immediately)," said Bowden. "Hopefully we're getting better communication on the offensive line and giving our backs a chance to be successful."
The running attack was balanced by another nice performance by quarterback Cullen Harper.
Harper threw for 179 yards (20-of-26) and two touchdowns - a beautiful 27-yard post to Aaron Kelly in the second quarter, and a fourth-quarter 2-yard toss to tight end Michael Palmer for Clemson's final touchdown.
The two TD passes give Harper 21 on the season, tying the school record currently shared by Charlie Whitehurst and Woody Dantzler.
Kelly finished with 54 yards on five catches, the TD his seventh of the year.
Meanwhile, the Tigers' defense kept Maryland out of the end zone until the fourth quarter.
Lance Ball scored on a two-yard run early in the quarter. Keon Lattimore tacked on a 1-yard score with 90 seconds left in the game.
Mark Buchholz converted three of four field goal opportunities for Clemson.
The Tigers are back on the road next week, traveling to Duke.
