James Davis

Running back

Douglass High School, Atlanta

5’11”, 205 lbs.

Being born on New Years Day of 1986 may have been a sign that James Davis was destined to do great things on that day. As he grew older and became a standout football player, the thought of Davis playing at the college level and perhaps helping his team earn a chance to play on New Years Day seemed like a strong possibility.

Davis followed a stellar junior year by rushing for over 2,500 yards and scoring 28 touchdowns as a senior. Every program would love to have a running back who averages over seven yards a carry, so the list of schools to offer Davis a scholarship included Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi State, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech.

Clemson was the school that Davis chose, and upon his arrival to campus on July 3, Davis plans to be in the best physical shape possible.

“I am working with (NFL star) Jamal Lewis’ brother, who is a personal trainer,” Davis said. “I bench press 295 pounds, and my time in the 40 in 4.49 seconds.”

Davis, who has qualified academically, is confident about what the 2005 season will bring for him and the Tigers.

“I am really looking forward to the season,” Davis said. “I plan to be on the field, so red-shirting is not a thought to me. I think we will have a great season. I see us going 10-1 or 9-2. I am that confident.”

Burton Burns is Davis’ position coach, and has given the incoming freshman several things to think about.

“Coach Burns has told me about the new plays we are adding and wants me to learn as much as possible,” Davis said. “He also wants me on campus, which is why I am getting there on July 3.”
