Recruiting is an inexact science. How many times have you heard a coach say, “We’ll have a wait a few years to see how this class does.” Well we did.
The jury is back and the verdict is being tallied on Clemson’s recruiting in the 1990’s. The results might surprise you.

Here’s a few quick facts. From 1990-1999:

- 261 players signed

- 76 never played

- 123 never started

- 103 (39%) of the signees started 94.8% of the games

- 3 players played four years and started every game

- Of the five players signed out of high school from west of the Mississippi, only one started a game.

- 33% of the players signed were from South Carolina.

- 18% from Georgia

- 14% from Florida

- 35% from 19 other states

- Rick Stockstill was the only coach to recruit every single class.

- 22 quarterbacks were signed. 7 started at QB. 5 started at other positions. 4 played in the NFL at positions other than QB.

- 19 wide receivers were signed. 1 played in the NFL.

- The class of 1999 still has 10 players on the field with one year of eligibility left so these numbers might change some, but not much.

If you look at the players that are signed, you’ll see that it’s hard to tell (1) who will qualify (2) who will stay at the position they were recruited (3) who will stay in school and (4) who will be a major contributor.

In the next Tiger Insider due out in February, we’ll look at the quality of player that was recruited in each class and break down each class. You’ll be able to tell who did the best job recruiting in the 90’s by looking at the classes and our rating system that rates each class by the quality it turned out – not just the won-loss records.

Also in the next Tiger Insider:

Tony Elliot – Is Clemson’s most productive receiver sitting on the bench? Some would say Elliot, a walk-on, is sitting at the expense of getting scholarship receivers their touches. We look at Elliot’s winding road to Clemson and how the rest of his career is shaping up after he decided to return for his senior year.

The class of 2003 – a look at every player that Clemson signed on February fifth with analysis that you won’t find anywhere else.

The Ticket Man – an interview with Van Hildebrand, the man that decides who sits where in Death Valley.

The Playbook – we take a look at a play from each side of the ball from last season.

Plus, more from signing day and the recruiting process that will surprise you. We’ll go inside the recruiting process with one of Clemson’s signees and provide an intimate look at what the players and coaches go through.

Renew or start a new subscription by the end of January and receive a 5x7 print of the scoreboard and goalposts at the end of the USC game. It’s suitable for framing. It’s the perfect conversation piece when your Gamecock friends visit your office and try to tell you they’re on their way to another “Top 10” recruiting class. You can just say “scoreboard!”
