Three Tigers Receive ACC Player of the Week Honors |
GREENSBORO, NC -- On Monday ACC weekly awards were announced and Clemson's
Woody Dantzler, Kyle Young, and Joe Don Reames received honors for their play against Virginia. ACC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK OFFENSIVE BACK - Woodrow Dantzler, QB, Clemson A 5-11, 200-pound junior, Dantzler broke his own ACC record for rushing yards by a QB in a single game with 220 yards on 18 carries in the Tigers' 31-10 victory at Virginia. Dantzler scored on runs of 75 and 45 yards and completed 15 of 24 passes for 154 yards and another score. The Orangeburg, S.C., product ended the game with 374 of Clemson's 481 yards of offense against the Cavaliers OFFENSIVE LINEMAN - Kyle Young, C, Clemson Young, a 6-3, 270-pound junior out of Clemson, S.C., graded out at 93 percent for his play during Clemson's 31-10 win over Virginia. The grade and the knockdown block total were his career high and the knockdown block total was the highest by a Clemson player in seven years. Young also received a 100 percent effort grade for his 65 plays of work. For the fourth straight game he did not allow a sack. DEFENSIVE LINEMAN - Jamal Reynolds, DE, Florida State A 6-4, 254-pound defensive end, Reynolds played a major role in Florida State's 31-0 victory over Louisville Saturday. The Aiken, S.C., senior had five tackles for losses, including three quarterback sacks as the Seminoles recorded their first shutout in 23 games. DEFENSIVE BACK - Tommy Polley, WLB, Florida State Polley, a 6-2, 235-pound senior linebacker from Baltimore, Md., led the Seminole defense once again in the win over Louisville. Scored his first touchdown of the year with a four-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter. Totaled 10 tackles, including five solos, and played a key role in limiting the Cardinals to three yards rushing. SPECIALIST - Joe Don Reames, Clemson Reames, a 5-10, 184-pound sophomore from Seneca, S.C., became the first Tiger in the Bowden era to return a kick for a touchdown when he went 69 yards with a punt return at Virginia. The score came with 12 minutes left in the second quarter and it tied the score at 10. Clemson had not returned a punt for a score since Tony Horne did it at South Carolina in 1997. ROOKIE - Philip Rivers, QB, NC State NC State freshman quarterback Philip Rivers tied an ACC record with his fourth ACC Rookie of the Week selection of the 2000 season. The 6-5, 221-pounder from Athens, Ala., completed 21 of 36 passes for 262 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Wolfpack to a 30-23 win over Georgia Tech in overtime. Rivers becomes only the fifth player in conference history to be named ACC Rookie of the Week four times. Other four-time ACC Rookie of the Week performers were North Carolina's Amos Lawrence (1977), Wake Forest's Michael Ramseur (1982), Georgia Tech's Joe Hamilton (1996) and Florida State's Travis Minor in 1997. Lawrence was also named ACC Offensive Back of the Week once for a total of five selections overall in 1977.
