Three Defensive Lineman Dismissed from Team |
CLEMSON - An ongoing criminal investigation apparently has led to three
Clemson University football players being dismissed from the team, according to a source familiar with the situation. The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the trio of defensive linemen - scholarship players Paul White and Marcus Lewis and walk-on Tyrone Dickerson - did not participate in Wednesday's spring practice and were informed of their dismissal by head coach Tommy Bowden. Charges have yet to be filed against the players, but the source said that could come early next week. The source also said the investigation is centering on credit card theft and/or fraud. Clemson defensive coordinator Reggie Herring, reached at his office Thursday afternoon, said he could not comment on the situation. "I've been told to refer all questions to (Bowden)," said Herring. Bowden was on his way to an IPTAY function and was unavailable for comment. For White, who was singled out by Herring for his improvement during spring practice two weeks ago, this would be the second time in four months he has had trouble with the law. White, former teammate Eugene Koon, and two other Clemson students - Nabil Salman and Ciro Piccirillo - were indicted Nov. 28, 2000, by a federal grand jury on counterfeiting charges. White, a native of Irmo, specifically was charged with conspiracy to commit counterfeit, which is a felony and carries a penalty of up to five years imprisonment. Lewis is from Lithonia, Ga., while Dickerson is from Rock Hill. All three players would have been sophomores in eligibility for the 2001 football season.
