Article IV. Bowl Championship Series Tie Breaking Procedures

  • The ACC football champion is the team that finishes the season with the highest winning percentage in conference games. If more than one team has the same winning percentage, the tied teams are declared co-champions.

  • In order to determine the Conference's representative to the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), the procedures listed below will be followed. All references to rankings refer to the BCS standings released after the regular season is completed for all ACC members.

    Two Way Tie (between Teams A &-B)

    1. Team A defeats Team B and is ranked higher - Team A earns the BCS bid.

    2. Team A defeats Team B and is ranked lower, but in the Top 10 - Team A earns bid (*except if Team B is ranked #1 or #2 in the BCS standings, then Team B earns the BCS bid).

    3. Team A defeats Team B and is ranked lower, but is ranked five or fewer positions below Team B - Team A earns the BCS bid.

    4. Team A defeats Team B and is ranked lower, and more than five positions below Team B - Team B earns the BCS bid.

    * If two teams have the same ranking, or both are unranked, the bid goes to the team that has won the head-to-head game.

    Clemson

    In eight games, freshman QB Charlie Whitehurst has thrown for 1,004 yards and nine touchdowns and only two interceptions ... junior PK Aaron Hunt is sixth on Clemson's all-time scoring list with 227 points ... Hunt has made 15 of 18 field goal attempts on the year and is second in the ACC in field goal percentage (.833) and field goals made per game (1.5) ... CB Justin Miller leads the ACC and is fifth nationally in interceptions per game (0.64) and is bidding to become the fourth freshman to lead the ACC in interceptions ... Miller leads all freshmen nationally with his seven interceptions ... Miller is also averaging 37.5 yards on 10 kickoff returns ...     Duke

    Junior linebacker Ryan Fowler is fourth in the ACC in tackles (11.5) ... the Blue Devils lead the ACC in rushing defense (119.2) and in time of possession (32:15) and are the second-least penalized team in the ACC (44.6) ... the Blue Devils haven't led the ACC in rushing defense since 1957 ... Alex Wade is fourth in the ACC in rushing (76.5) while Chris Douglas is sixth (59.8) ... Douglas is 58 yards shy of becoming only the fifth Blue Devil to rush for 2,000 yards in his career and is tied for 10th on the ACC's all-time kickoff return yardage list with 1,645 yards ... led by Shawn Johnson (10 sacks), Duke is fourth in the ACC with 25 QB sacks ...     Florida State

    In his last four games, Adrian McPherson has thrown for 772 yards and 10 TDs while suffering only one interception ... McPherson has thrown for at least two touchdowns in four straight games and five times overall ... Greg Jones, the ACC rushing leader with 938 yards in nine games, will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury ... the Noles are the only ACC team to average over 200 yards per game rushing (204.0) and passing (224.6) ... prior to missing the North Carolina games with an injury, senior Nick Maddox has run for 244 yards and two TDs in two games ... FSU has out-scored opponents by more than 126 points (176-50) in the second quarter ... junior WR Anquan Boldin has six TD receptions in the last four games and leads the ACC with 10 TD receptions.

    Georgia Tech

    Gordon Clinkscale ran for 71 yards and two touchdowns and A.J. Suggs completed 18 of 28 passes for 200 yards as Tech's won for the third time in four games, 17-2 over Duke ... Suggs has thrown for 200 yards or more in five straight games and is third in the ACC with 2,044 yards passing ... over his last five games, senior TB Gordon Clinkscale has averaged 6.7 yards per carry, rushing for 415 yards on 62 carries ... Luke Manget has made an ACC-record 156 consecutive PATs and is third on the ACC career scoring list with 318 points ... WR Kerry Watkins is 10th on the ACC's career receiving yardage list (2,537) and tied for 19th in receptions (161) ... Kelley Rhino is second on the ACC's all-time punt return yardage list with 1,191 yards.

    Maryland

    Scott McBrien passed for three touchdowns and ran for for a score as Maryland held an ACC opponent without a touchdown for the first time in six years in a 30-12 victory over Clemson ... the win marked the Terps' sixth-straight road win over the past two years and snapped a string of eight straight losses in Death Valley dating back to 1985 ... McBrien leads the ACC in yards per completion (15.8) and is 12th nationally in passing efficiency (143.7) ... Steve Suter leads the ACC in punt returns (13.6) and kickoff returns (27.6) and has tied an NCAA single season record with his four punt returns ... the eight-game winning streak is the Terps' longest since a 12-game streak in the 1977 and 1978 seasons ... senior Chris Downs leads the team with 995 yards rushing.

    North Carolina

    Senior wide receiver Sam Aiken is second in the ACC in receptions (5.5) and third in receiving yards (82.0) and is 98 yards shy of becoming the first 1,000-yard receiver in school history ... Aiken already holds the school's single-season record for receptions with 58 and needs only 69 yards to eclipse UNC's single-season mark for receiving yards (970) set by Octavus Barnes in 1995 ... sophomore quarterback Darian Durant, who fractured his right thumb against Virginia and will miss the remainder of the season, is the ACC's active career passing efficiency leader with a 149.1 rating ... in his last five games, QB C.J. Stephens has thrown for 828 yards and three touchdowns ... freshman QB Matt Baker threw his first career TD pass, a 14-yard toss to Danny Rumley, in the fourth quarter against FSU.

    NC State

    QB Philip Rivers needs only 46 yards to throw for 3,000 yards on the season ... Rivers leads the ACC in total offense (252.3) and is sixth on the ACC career passing list (8,594) and seventh in total offense (8,567) ... Rivers is fifth in the ACC with 10 rushing TDs ... T.A. McLendon is third in the ACC in rushing and is fourth nationally among all freshmen averaging 88.1 yards per game ... McLendon has 32 catches in his last seven games and is second among ACC running backs with 36 receptions for 309 yards ... junior WR Jericho Cotchery had eight catches for 108 yards against Virginia Saturday ... Cotchery has gone over 100 yards receiving in three straight games and six times this season and is the fourth State player to break the 1,000-yard mark (1,047) in a season.

    Virginia

    The Cavaliers became bowl elgible following Saturday's 14-9 win over 20th-ranked NC State ... sophomore TB Marquis Weeks ran for a career-high 129 yards on 19 carries, surpassing his career total of 53 yards coming into the game ... QB Matt Schaub leads the ACC and ranks eighth nationally in passing efficinecy (147.7) ... Schaub has thrown a TD pass in 11 straight games and has a school-record 23 TD passes this season ... Billy McMullen needs only two catches to become only the fourth player in ACC history with 200 or more career receptions ... McMullen is currently third in the ACC in career receptions (198) and eighth in receiving yardage (2,864) ... with 45 receptions in the first 11 games, TB Wali Lundy is tied for the fourth-best single season reception total by an ACC freshman.

    Wake Forest

    After two consecutive open dates, the Deacons return to action to host Navy Saturday in Groves Stadium this coming Saturday ... the last time Wake Forest had at least 20 days off in between games was in 1928 when the Deacs played at Mercer on Nov. 29 and then finished the regular season Christmas day at Miami (Fla.) ... DE Calvin Pace leads the ACC with 17 tackles for loss and is third in QB sacks (8.0) ... Tarence Williams has run for 97 yards or more in four of his last five games and is fifth on the school's all-time rushing list with 2,325 yards ... the Deacs lead the ACC and rank eighth nationally in rushing offense (248.1) ... led by Williams (596 yards), Wake has six players in the ACC top 20 rushing leaders ... Chris Barclay is second among all ACC freshmen in rushing (49.4).

    THE GAME: North Carolina has held the upper hand in this long-time rivalry since these two arch rivals first met on the gridiron in 1888 ... the Tar Heels have beaten the Blue Devils 12 straight times and lead the series 49-34-4, including a 26-16-2 mark in Chapel Hill ... the 12-game UNC win streak is the longest winning streak in the series' history ...     LAST MEETING: Sophomore QB James MacPherson completed 15 of 21 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns and Tarence Williams ran for 75 yards and three scores as the Deacs totaled 577 yards en route to a 49-26 win before 30,370 in Winston-Salem.

    THE COACHES: Paul Johnson is 1-9 in his first year at Navy and 63-19 in six seasons overall ... Jim Grobe is 11-10 in his second season at Wake Forest and 44-43-1 in seven years overall.

    LAST YEAR: South Carolina snapped a four-game losing streak against Clemson with a 20-15 victory before a Williams-Brice Stadium record crowd of 85,000 ... Woodrow Dantzler threw for 204 yards and two scores and added 102 yards rushing on 20 carries for the Tigers.
