Virginia’s Blackstock ties ACC Freshmen Sack Record

Virginia outside linebacker Darryl Blackstock had four tackles, including two quarterback sacks in Virginia's 37-27 win over North Carolina Saturday ... Blackstock leads the nation in sacks by a freshman with eight, which ties the ACC single-season record for freshmen.

THE GAME: If Thursday’s 71st renewal of the Tiger-Wolfpack rivalry follows the pattern of the last three encounters, fans in Death Valley will be in for an evening of fireworks ... over the last four series meetings the two teams have combined to average 73.5 points and 842.0 yards per game ... the Tigers have won two in a row and five of the last seven meetings and lead the series 44-25-1.

LAST YEAR: Woodrow Dantzler totaled 517 yards of total offense and accounted for six touchdowns as Clemson edged NC State 45-37 ... Dantzler completed 23-of-27 passes for 333 yards and four TDs and picked up 184 yards rushing on 23 carries ... NC State’s Philip Rivers threw for 410 yards and four  TDs.

THE COACHES: Chuck Amato is 23-9 in his third season at NC State ... Tommy Bowden is 26-17 in four years at Clemson and 45-20 in six seasons overall.

Game Notes:

*       Clemson is 4-1 against ranked NC State  football teams in Memorial Stadium ... overall, the Tigers are 5-3 against State when the Wolfpack enter the game ranked in the AP poll.

In two career games against Clemson, NC State quarterback Philip Rivers has thrown for 680 yards and seven touchdowns ... Rivers leads the nation in passing efficiency while Clemson leads the ACC in pass defense allowing only 164.1 yards per game.

Under Bowden, the Tigers are 9-5 against ACC foes in Memorial Stadium while the Wolfpack has won three straight ACC road games, and four of their last five.

  In the last four series’ meetings, NC State has turned the ball over only twice while the Tigers have 14 turnovers.

THE GAME: The Tar Heels and the Demon Deacons renew the ACC’s second-longest running rivalry when they meet for the 99th time in a series that began in 1888 with a 6-4 Wake Forest victory ... only UNC and Virginia (107) have played one another on more occasions in the ACC ... the Tar Heels have won 10 of the last 12 meetings and lead the series 65-31-2 ... UNC has won the last five meetings in Groves Stadium with the Deacs’ last win at homecoming in 1988, 42-24.

LAST YEAR: Wake Forest scored 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and the Deacs rallied from a 24-point halftime deficit to post a 32-31 win in Chapel Hill ... WF’s Tarence Williams ran for 101 yards on 29 carries while UNC’s Darian Durant completed 24 -of-32 passes for 361 yards and four touchdowns.

THE COACHES: John Bunting is 10-10 in two years at UNC and 48-24-2 in six seasons overall ... Jim Grobe is 10-9 in his second season at Wake Forest and 43-42-1 in seven years overall

Game Notes:

*       The team that rushes for the most yards has won the last 12 games in this series ... over the last three meetings, the losing team has averaged 21.3 yards rushing per game.

22 of Wake Forest’s 24 offensive touchdowns have come via the ground game while 17 of UNC’s 21 touchdowns have come through the air ... the Deacs have six players listed among the top 20 in the ACC in rushing

Wake Forest is 10th in the nation in rushing  offense averaging 249.9 yards per game while North Carolina is 12th nationally in passing offense (296.3) ... Wake is 35th nationally in total offense averaging 400.8 yards per game (their best mark since 1986) while the Tar Heels are 36th (400.7).

THE GAME: A full house and a national television audience will be on hand as 14th-ranked Florida State and No. 8 Notre Dame tangle for the fifth time in a series that started in 1981 ... the Seminoles have won the last two meetings and lead the rivalry 3-1.

LAST MEETING: Danny Kanell threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to lead FSU to a 31-26 come-from-behind victory in the 1996 Orange Bowl.

THE COACHES: Tyrone Willingham is 7-0 in his first season at Notre Dame and 51-36-1 in eight years overall ... Bobby Bowden is 255-61-4 in 27 years at FSU and 328-93-4 in 37 seasons overall.

Game Notes:

*       Saturday’s game will mark Notre Dame’s first visit to Doak Campbell Stadium where the Seminoles are 135-18-2 (.877) in the last 27 seasons under Bobby Bowden.

Since the 1989 season, the Seminoles are 25-3-1 (.879) in Doak-Campbell Stadium against AP-ranked teams, including an 11-2 (.846) mark against top 10 teams.

Each of the previous four meetings between the two teams have been decided by seven points or less.

Notre Dame has won 19 of its last 20 games in the month of October and since the 1988 season, the Irish are 51-8 in October contests.

Florida State is one of eight Division I-A teams to be averaging over 200 yards both in rushing (230.7) and passing (205.7).

Florida State is 18th nationally in total offense (436.4) while Notre Dame is 10th among Division I-A teams in total defense (275.9).

THE GAME: Maryland has held the upper hand in this long-time rivalry that was first contested in 1932 ... since 1972, the Terps have won 24 of the 28 meetings between the two teams to take a 27-18 lead in the rivalry ... Duke won 14 of the first 17 meetings between 1932 and 1972 ... Maryland has won 12 of the last 13 games played in Wallace Wade Stadium and is 13-9 all-time against the Blue Devils in Durham.

LAST YEAR: Maryland QB Shaun Hill passed for 323 yards and added 105 yards rushing as the Terps scored touchdowns on their first six offensive possessions en route to a 59-17 win in College Park.

THE COACHES: Ralph Friedgen is 15-4 in his second season at Maryland ... Carl Franks is 5-36 in four years at Duke.

Game Notes:

*       After winning only two of their previous 15 ACC road games, the Terps have rebounded to win four of their last six road games against league foes.

In the last seven meetings between the two teams, Maryland has averaged 240.4 yards rushing per game.

In Duke’s last series’ win, a 25-22 decision in 1999, Maryland limited the Blue Devils to a minus five yards rushing.

Over the last five weeks of the season, Maryland’s Scott McBrien and Duke’s Adam Smith have combined for only one interception in 208 pass attempts ... since Sept. 14, McBrien has thrown 75 passes without an interception while Smith has thrown only one interception in his last 133 pass attempts .

 Virginia (6-2, 4-1 ACC)

at Georgia Tech (4-3, 1-3 ACC)

THE GAME: Virginia and Georgia Tech renew acquaintances for the 25th time in one of the ACC’s most competitive rivalries ... the Cavaliers have won seven of the last 10 games againts Tech, but the Jackets still lead the series 12-11-1 ... the two teams have split the last six meetings ... Georgia Tech is 10-5 against Virginia in Atlanta ...five of the last six meetings have been decided by seven points or less

LAST YEAR: Alvin Pearman took a lateral from Billy McMullen and ran 27 yards for the winning score with 22 seconds left lifting Virginia to a 39-38 win.

THE COACHES: Al Groh is 11-9 in his second year at UVa and 37-49 in seven seasons overall ... Chan Gailey is 4-3 in his first year at Georgia Tech and 28-14 in four years overall.

Game Notes:

*       Virginia and Georgia Tech combined for 56 first downs and 1,021 yards in total offense and scored seven fourth-quarter touchdowns in last year’s game in Charlottesville.

*       The home team has won the last seven meetings in the series ... Virginia’s 24-7 win in Atlanta in 1994 was the last victory by the visiting team.

Over the last five years the two teams have combined to average nearly 1,000 yards and 70 points per game ... Tech has averaged 36.6 points and 492.4 yards while the Cavaliers are averaging 31.4 points and 452.2 yards per contest.

*       The last time Virginia had a six-game winning streak (1997-1998), Georgia Tech was the team that ended the Cavaliers’ streak with a 41-38 win in Atlanta on Oct. 17, 1998.


Clemson: Bernard Rambert ran for two second-half touchdowns and the Tiger defense came up with five turnovers as Clemson snapped  a two-game losing streak with a 31-23 victory over Wake Forest ... Derrick Hamilton has three 200 all-purpose yardage games this season ... Hamilton leads the ACC and is 10th nationally in all-purpose yardage (164.6) ... Hamilton’s 164.6 yards per game average is 16.1 yards per game ahead of Tony Horne’s school record of 148.5 yards per game set in 1997... the Tigers are second in the ACC and 21st in the nation in total defense allowing 316.6 yards per game as compared to 395.0 yards allowed per contest last year ... sophomore Yusef Kelly leads the team in rushing with 393 yards and eight touchdowns ... junior PK Aaron Hunt is seventh on Clemson’s all-time scoring list with 199 points ... senior Brian Mance leads the ACC interceptions with four ... the Tigers lead the ACC in pass defense (164.1) and are tied with Florida State for the league lead with 11 interceptions.

Duke: Three of the Blue Devils’ remaining four games are at home ... in four ACC games, Duke is allowing only 83 yards rushing per game ... overall the Blue Devils are allowing only 121.8 yards per contest - their lowest yield since a 121.2 mark in 1955 ... offensively, Alex Wade (712 yards) and Chris Douglas (402 yards), key a ground game that is averaging 167.0 yards per game - the best per game average since a 178.7 mark in 1978 ... Douglas is 11th on Duke’s career rushing list with 1,746 yards ... the Blue Devils lead the ACC in time of possession (32:30) ... QB Adam Smith threw for a career-high 353 yards in Saturday’s loss to NC State ... Smith is sixth in the ACC in passing efficiency (127.3) and has thrown only two interceptions in 191 passing attempts on the season.

Florida State: Head coach Bobby Bowden is second all-time among Division I-A coaches with 328 career victories ... junior Greg Jones ran for a career-high 189 yards and one touchdown on 31 carries in FSU’s one-point loss to top-ranked Miami  (Oct.12) ... Jones has five 100-yard games this season, leads the ACC and is 16th nationally in rushing (822 yards) at 117.4 yards per game ... in his last two games, Jones has rushed for 354 yards and four touchdowns while averaging 6.7 yards per carry ... quarterback Chris Rix needs 95 yards to become only the third player in ACC history to pass for 4,000 yards by his sophomore season ... the Seminoles are averaging over 200 yards both rushing (230.7) and passing (205.7) and lead the ACC in total offense (436.4) ... the last time Florida State averaged more yards rushing than passing in a season was in 1987 when the Noles averaged 272.3 yards rushing and 215.1 yards passing.

Georgia Tech:  Placekicker Luke Manget has made an ACC-record 150 consecutive PATs and is 11th on the all-time ACC scoring list with 285 career points ... WR Kerry Watkins is third on Tech’s career reception list (139), third in receiving yards (2,285) and second in TD receptions (20) ... Watkins has five career 100-yard receiving games and leads the ACC in receptions per game (5.6) and is second in receiving yards (93.6) ... senior TB Gordon Clinkscale ran five times for a career-high 87 yards in Thursday’s loss at Maryland ... against the Terps, QB A.J. Suggs completed 28 of 45 passes for a season-high 272 yards ... Tech has out-scored its opponents 103-to-56 in the first quarter ... after catching only three passes for 17 yards in the season’s first four games, WR Jonathan Smith has 15 receptions for 149 yards over his last three games.

Maryland: The Terps have won four games in a row by an average of 31.5 points per game ... keyed by senior TB Chris Downs, the Terps have averaged 231.5 yards rushing during the four-game winning streak ... in Thursday’s 34-10 win over Georgia Tech, Downs ran 26 times for a career-high 212 yards and three touchdowns; the 212 yards was the 12th-best single game total in school history ... Downs has scored at least one TD in each of the six games he has played this season ... WR Scooter Monroe had a career-high in receptions (5) and yards (108) against the Yellow Jackets ...  the Terps have two or less turnovers in five of their seven games this season ... PK Nick Novak has made 12 of 15 field goal attempts this season ... Maryland has outscored its opponents 61-19 in the first quarter this year ... Brooks Barnard leads the ACC and is ninth nationally in punting average (44.1)

North Carolina: Starting quarterback Darian Durant fractured his right thumb against Virginia Saturday leads the ACC in total offense (285.9), passing yardage (265.9), plays per game (40.6) and is third in passing efficiency (148.3 rating) ... Durant has passed for 225-or-more yards in six of UNC’s seven games ... although he started just nine games in his career, Durant is already third in UNC history with 32 touchdown passes, sixth in passing yardage (3,704) and seventh in total offense (3,970) ... Durant is bidding to become the first Tar Heel since Paul Miller in 1971 to lead the ACC in total offense ... senior WR Sam Aiken leads the ACC in receiving yards per game (97.4) and is second in receptions (5.1) ... Aiken is sixth among UNC career receiving yardage leaders (1,897) and is seventh in career receptions with 114.

NC State:  NC State is 8-0 for the first time since 1967 and is ranked ninth in this week’s Coaches’ Poll ... junior QB Philip Rivers leads the nation in passing efficiency (170.8) and has thrown at least one TD pass in 24 of his 30 career starts ... Rivers is ninth on the ACC career passing list (7,655) and 11th in total offense (7,585) ... true freshman T.A. McLendon leads the ACC in scoring (10.3) and is second in rushing (90.7) ... wide receiver Bryan Peterson is tied for fourth on State’s all-time reception list (122) and seventh in receiving yardage (1,783) ... Terrance Holt has blocked an ACC-record 12 kicks for his career, including seven field goal attempts ... the Pack has blocked 37 kicks since the start of the 1998 season ... NC State’s five remaining opponents are a combined 24-12 (.667) - the 16th toughest remaining schedule in the country.

Virginia: Matt Schaub threw two second half touchdown passes as Virginia rallied from a 21-0 halftime deficit and beat North Carolina 37-27 ... following losses to Colorado State and Florida State to open the season, the Cavaliers have won six in a row for their longest winning streak since a six-game skein in the 1997 and 1998 seasons ... UVa has now won the last four games in which they trailed at halftime ... the Cavaliers’ 21-point rally is UVa’s biggest comeback against an ACC opponent and the second biggest overall ... quarterback Matt Schaub is sixth nationally in passing efficiency (155.9) and has thrown a TD pass in eight straight games ... Virginia has out-scored their opponents 177-to-76 in the second half this season ... Billy McMullen is ninth on the ACC career receiving yardage chart (2,586) and is 10th in career receptions (174) ...  the Cavaliers have allowed only 10 quarterback sacks on the season  ... LB Darryl Blackstock tied the ACC QB sack record by freshmen with eight ... Virginia’s five remaining opponents are a combined 29-7 (.806) - second only to Minnesota as the toughest remaining schedule in the country.

Wake Forest: The Deacons rushed for a season-high 365 yards in Saturday 31-23 loss at Clemson  ... the Deacs lead the ACC and rank 10th nationally in rushing offense (249.9) and are one of three ACC teams to not have had a 100-yard rusher this season ... led by first-year freshman Chris Barclay’s 430 yards, Wake has six players in the ACC top 20 rushing leaders ... WR Fabian Davis is second in the ACC in all-purpose yardage (161.5), third in kickoff returns (24.3), fifth in punt returns (8.7), seventh in receiving yardage (57.8), ninth in receptions (3.8) and 14th in rushing (41.0) ...  senior tailback Tarence Williams is eighth on Wake’s all-time rushing list with 2,075 yards ... the Deacons are 0-3 this season when rushing for 300 yards or more in a game ... 22 of Wake’s 24 offensive touchdowns have been via the ground game.
