THE GAME: Virginia brings down the curtain on its 112th season of intercollegiate football when the Cavaliers host a Nittany Lion club that has won five of its last six games ... this is the first meeting between the two teams since a 14-6 Virginia win in 1989 ... Penn State leads the series 4-1, including a 2-0 mark in Charlottesville ... UVa defensive coordinator Al Golden was Penn State's starting tight end in 1990-91 while the Cavaliers' assistant head coach lettered at Penn State in 1979-80 while Virginia football administrative assistant Tom Sherhan was the Lions' QB in 1966-67, Joe Paterno's first two years as head coach. THE COACHES: Joe Paterno, the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division I-A history, is 327-95-3 in 36 seasons at Penn State ... Al Groh is 4-7 in his first year at Virginia and 30-47 in seven seasons overall. NITTANY NOTES: Penn State has won five of six games after an 0-4 start ... the Nittany Lions have been behind in all five of their wins, including double-digit deficits to beat Ohio State and Michigan State ... Penn State is 61-10-2 (.849) all-time against teams currently in the ACC ... the Nittany Lions have not lost a fumble in their last six games. CAV COPY: Junior WR Billy McMullen leads the ACC in receptions (7.3), receiving yardage (92.6); and TD receptions (12) and has scored at least one TD in eight of UVa's 11 games ... McMullen is Virginia's all-time leader in receptions (138) and is fifth in receiving yardage (2,043) and is bidding to become the first Cavalier to lead the ACC in receptions since Tom Fadden in 1975 ... McMullen's 80 receptions are the second-best single season total in ACC history and only eight shy of the existing league mark of 88 set by NC State's Torry Holt ... the Cavaliers have two quarterbacks - Matt Schaub (1,449) and Bryson Spinner

THE GAME: Clemson has held the upper hand in this long-time rivalry between these two teams since they first met on the gridiron in 1934 ... the Tigers have won two in a row (by a 110-to-29 margin) and 20 of the last 24 meetings to take a 29-15-1 lead in the series ... the Tigers have won the last 10 games played in "Death Valley" with the last Duke win coming in 1980.
