TSL: Clemson “Special” In Victory Over Maryland |
Each week TigerNet will be providing a computer simulation of the upcoming 2001 ACC football season. While the focus will be on Clemson we will be able to predict the winner of the ACC title as well. Enjoy!
COLLEGE PARK -- One week after an emotional victory over Florida State, Clemson was forced to rely on special teams to put points on the board. Brian Mance and Derrick Hamilton stepped up to the task, however, and the Tigers downed the Terrapins 31-20, completing their ACC schedule for the year. A fired up Maryland (4-6, 3-4) team posed a tougher challenge than Clemson (9-1, 7-1) expected, and the game stayed close until the closing minutes of the fourth quarter. The Tigers scored early, as senior quarterback Woodrow Dantzler connected with junior Jackie Robinson for a catch and run 49 yard touchdown. This touchdown marked the fifth time this year that Clemson has scored points on their opening drive. After receiving the kickoff following the score, Maryland used a precision passing attack to go on a 13 play drive that ended in a 34 field goal by Vedad Siljkovic. A turnover on Clemson’s next possession allowed Siljkovic to add another 3 points and Maryland pulled itself to within a point of the Tigers. The second quarter saw both defenses impose their will on the other teams offense. Clemson notched four sacks in the quarter, including two by junior Bryant McNeal. Following the second of these sacks, Maryland’s punt was field by Mance, who weaved through traffic before breaking into the open and going 64 yards for the touchdown. The third quarter turned into the Derrick Hamilton show. After making a diving catch for a 31 yard touchdown reception earlier in the quarter, Hamilton broke his second kickoff return of the year for a score. Hamilton’s speed was evident, as two Maryland players had the angle on him as he sprinted down the sideline, but were outraced into the endzone and Clemson jumped to 28-13 lead. A nine yard touchdown catch by Bruce Perry cut the lead to eight in the fourth quarter, but Rodney Thomas’s interception of a Shawn Hill pass led to a 47 yard field goal by Tiger sophomore Aaron Hunt. The Clemson defense clamped down on the Terrapin offense, and a sack by Nick Eason on fourth down ended Maryland’s hope for a win. Clemson visits the arch-rival Gamecocks in Columbia next week for their final game of the season. NOTE: Altoy Bodrick tore his ACL shortly after these simulations were completed. SIMULATION NOTES
For each Clemson contest the game is simulated 10 times using Madden 2001 for the PC. We then average the scores and pick the one game
that most accurately reflects the average game.
We worked hard to make the simulations are as accurate as possible, but there are some things that
we can't control. Consider the following:
1) Quarterbacks rarely run in the simulations.
2) Based on the info we have, the rosters and depth charts used in these
simulations are OUR interpretations. While other schools have NO true
freshman playing (mainly because we are not as familier with them as
Clemson), Clemson has some, including Roscoe Crosby.
3) NFL stadiums and rules will be used.
4) Players do fatigue, but are seldom replaced. What we try to do with
teams like Wofford is use Zachery for one half, and then use Kelly and
Rambert for a quarter each. However, in a game against, say, FSU,
Zachery might end up with 30+ carries.
5) Teams will use NFL playbooks. We've tried to find NFL playbooks that
most closely mirror college playbooks.
6) Obviously weather can't be predicted. Every game will be played in
fair weather.
7) Injuries can't be predicted. They DO occur in the simulations, and
we keep track of them. If Matt Bailey breaks his arm against FSU in
the simulation we chose to use, he will not appear for the rest of the
year.
8) Simulations are meant for entertainment only!!
