CLEMSON - Reports that sophomore linebacker Eric Sampson has been dismissed
from the Clemson football team are true, according to Sports Information
Director Tim Bourret.

Bourret could not provide any immediate details, saying only an official
release would be forthcoming later this afternoon.

Sampson has been dismissed from the Tigers for conduct detrimental to the
team and unbecoming a Clemson student athlete. Academic matters did play a
role in the decision.

Head coach Tommy Bowden was to meet with reporters at 2:30 p.m. The official
release will come sometime thereafter.

Sampson started all 12 regular season games and was fourth on the squad in
tackles with 79. He was named Clemson's defensive rookie of the year in 2001.

Meanwhile, defensive back Ryan Hemby, who was arrested recently on a
disorderly conduct charge in Orangeburg, will not be suspended for the
Tangerine Bowl.
