Recruiting: Thompson and Groover Package Deal Not Likely

Markell Thompson

Defensive end

Southwest Mississippi Junior College

6'7", 280 lbs.

As a senior in 2001 at Whitefish Bay Dominican High School (just
outside Milwaukee), Markell Thompson had colleges from all over the
nation recruting him for his basketball and football talents.

Thompson felt it was better to go to junior college first, however, and
through his high school coach landed at Southwest Mississippi. After two
seasons at the JUCO level, Thompson is ready to make the move to
Division I.

Clemson, Florida, Wisconsin, Oregon State, Memphis, Michigan State,
and Iowa State have all made offers to Thompson, but he is leaning
towards Florida.

"I will more than likely choose Florida," Thompson said. "They are the
only school that has really kept in contact with me."

Although Southwest Mississippi teammate Cory Groover has
committed to Clemson, Thompson said the Tigers' lack of contact is the
reason why he won't be playing for the orange and white next season.

"It would have been nice to go there and play with Cory, someone I
know," Thompson said. "But I haven't heard from Clemson since Coach
Smith came to visit me. I would have been very interersted in coming to Clemson."

Thompson made an official visit to Clemson with Groover for the Florida State game.
