With a strong finish and the contract extension of Coach Tommy
Bowden, Clemson has sold a lot of players on the promising future of the

One of those players, tight end / defensive end Phillip Merling of
Tennessee's Cordova High School, is so impressed with the program
that he picked the Tigers without having made an official visit.

"I like their (Clemson's) weight room program," said Merling. "They get everyone big and strong there. They want me to play tight end, and I think their offensive scheme fits in well with me."

Merling, who is originally from Calhoun County (SC), selected the Tigers over South Carolina and Arkansas. He was recruited by Clemson assistant coach Brad Scott. He will make his official visit to Clemson this coming weekend.

"Merling is a very talented athelete that can play two positions," said recruiting analyst Mickey Plyler. "He has a big body and runs well. He would have been ranked really high in the state of South Carolina had he not moved to Tennessee. Another thing that makes him attractive is living with a current college coach allowed him to learn more about the game."

Merling lives with Memphis outside linebackers coach Chris Rumph,
who is Merling's uncle, legal guardian and former high school coach.

This season Merling recorded 22 catches for 325 yards and a touchdown.
