Record Seven ACC Teams Ranked in AP Poll

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- An Atlantic Coast Conference record seven teams were ranked in this week’s Associated Press college football poll. The previous league record for most teams ranked in the weekly AP poll was five on 10 different occasions, including this season’s pre-season poll.

Virginia Tech leads all ACC schools with a No. 7 ranking. Florida State is ranked 11th, Miami 14th, Georgia Tech 17th, Boston College 19th, Virginia 23rd and Clemson 25th. In addition, an eighth ACC team, NC State, received 13 votes in the poll.

The ACC led all conferences with seven teams ranked in this week’s AP poll. The SEC and the Big Ten were tied for second with four ranked teams, followed by the Big 12 and Pac-10 with three teams each.

This past weekend the ACC posted a 5-2 non-conference record, which included two wins against AP-ranked opponents. Clemson defeated No. 17 Texas A&M 25-24 and Georgia Tech recorded a key non-league road win defeating 16th-ranked Auburn 23-14. Boston College made its ACC debut with a 20-3 win at BYU, Maryland defeated Navy 23-20 before 67,809 in Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium and Virginia beat visiting Western Michigan 31-19.

The ACC, which several attendance records a year ago and led the nation in percent of capacity, drew 308,075 fans over five home games in the season’s first week, a 99.2 percent of capacity.
