Quotable Bowden: Tigers Return to Spring Practice

by -

Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden offered his thoughts on Monday's spring workout:

Bowden on Akeem Robinson

“You can’t stop him. You can only contain him. His hands have gotten better this year. You can lose confidence so quickly in that area because catching is such a mental thing. If you lose confidence, you will start thinking about dropping balls. I couldn’t help, but think he would get better in that aspect,” Bowden said. “He shows the desire and has the skills to help us out next year.”

Bowden on being back at practice after an 11-day lay-off.

The enthusiasm was good, the effort was good and I thought we got a lot done.

On like to see a defensive lineman emerge out of that young group.

“I’d like to see which one of those takes the initiative to say ‘hey they are always lumping us together. I think I’m better than some of these guys. I would like to see one or two of them kind of mentally take the challenge that I’m going to be a difference maker.”

On Antonio Clay closing the gap on Tremaine Billie at SAM linebacker

“Antonio has closed the separation. He is the one that had made the move which is good.”

Kavell Conner, a middle linebacker, has also caught the coaches’ eyes. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound red shirt freshman was a safety in high school.

On the pace of practice.

“There is less hollering about getting lined up like it was last year at this time. Anytime you can do that their true potential can kind of emerge a little quicker because they know what to do and their athleticism can take over. Anytime you think in this sport you are behind a little bit.”

Injures.

Third-team center Barry Humphries was held out of Monday’s practice, but Bowden hopes he will be back in time for this weekend’s scrimmage. Humphries suffered a high ankle sprain in the Tigers last practice before spring break.
