Quick look at prospects left on Clemson's recruiting board

by - Senior Writer -

National Signing Day is just a little under a month away, and the Clemson coaching staff has been busy trying to put the final pieces of the 2012 recruiting class together.

Here, TigerNet takes a look at the remaining prospects on Clemson’s board – plus the players thought to be on the board - with an update on each of them.

WR Quinshad Davis Quinshad Davis
Wide Receiver
6-3, 185
Gaffney, SC

, Gaffney (SC) – The 4-star receiver still has Tennessee, Wake Forest, Ole Miss, Illinois, NC State, South Carolina, Clemson, and Georgia still on his list. His final visit is to Ole Miss on the 27th and he will make a decision after that. He is not visiting an in-state school. However, from what I am hearing, he is no longer on Clemson’s recruiting board simply because of the numbers of wide receivers the Tigers already possess, plus 2012 commit Germone Hopper Germone Hopper

DE Kenderius Whitehead Kenderius Whitehead
Defensive End
6-5, 210
Monroe, GA

, Martin Luther King (Lithonia, Ga.) – Whitehead is a 3-star defensive end who will be visiting Clemson this weekend. In fact, he is the lone uncommitted player that will be in this weekend’s group. Whitehead, who would play the bandit position at Clemson, has Georgia in the lead with Clemson and N.C. State trailing. This will be a big weekend for the Tigers to try and make up some ground.

DL D.J. Reader, Grimsley (Greensboro, NC) – Reader is being considered for the offensive line at North Carolina and the defensive line at Maryland and Clemson. Recruiter Dan Brooks visited with Reader last week, and Reader says the Tigers are now No. 1 on his list, followed by Maryland. He says he will wait until signing day to make his decision, but he will visit Clemson on January 20th. He also plays baseball – as a first baseman – and is interested in playing baseball in college as well.

RB Todd Gurley Todd Gurley
Running Back
6-1, 200
Tarboro, NC

View Full Profile
, Tarboro (NC) – Gurley is rated a 3-star by many scouting services. Don’t believe it, because he is better than that. I saw him in person during Shrine Bowl practices and in the Shrine Bowl, where he was named MVP. He has good hands and an ability to move the chains. He plays bigger than his 6-2, 200-pound size and shows a surprising burst. He is announcing this Friday, and from all accounts the Tigers are still in the race for Gurley. He says it is down to Clemson, Georgia, UNC and N.C. State, even though it looks like the Tar Heels have almost dropped out of the competition.

RB Mike Davis Mike Davis
Running Back
5-10, 195
Stone Mountain, GA

, Stephenson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) – This 4-star running back is the younger brother of former Tiger back James Davis. He has recently said that FSU, Clemson, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee are his top-five with Georgia as his leader. He was once committed to Florida but said he had an issue with communication with the staff there and decided to go somewhere else. He will be on campus January 27th and will announce on Signing Day. He has already taken visits to FSU and Tennessee.

LB Cassanova McKinzy Cassanova McKinzy
Linebacker
6'3, 230
Birmingham, AL

View Full Profile
, Woodlawn (Birmingham, Ala.) – This 4-star OLB has been committed to Auburn since March of 2011, but there have been rumors of a flirtation with other schools, including Clemson, but sources tell me he is no longer on Clemson’s list.

CB Ronald Darby Ronald Darby
Defensive Back
5-11, 175
Oxon Hill, MD

View Full Profile
, Potomac (Oxon Hill, MD) – Darby recently de-committed from Notre Dame, and it looks like his list is down to Auburn, FSU, Clemson and Maryland. Notre Dame is still in the mix even though he de-committed. He was originally slated to visit Clemson this weekend, but those plans have been put on hold as tries to decide his itinerary for the rest of the month. After speaking with his high school coach Wednesday afternoon, it looks like Auburn, Florida St. and LSU are really the three schools that have the best shot at Darby.

DT Eddie Goldman Eddie Goldman
Defensive Line
6-4, 305
Washington DC,

View Full Profile
, Friendship Collegiate Academy (Washington, D.C.) – The Tigers went hard after Goldman early, and he has already taken official visits to Alabama, Auburn, FSU, and Miami. He had said late last month that he was still trying to decide on whether to take a last visit to Cal, Clemson or Maryland, but I have been told that the Tigers have backed off of Goldman considerably due to what they perceive as a lack of interest from the 5-star prospect.
