CLEMSON - Charlie Whitehurst or Will Proctor? Will Proctor or Charlie Whitehurst?
Who starts at quarterback for Clemson Saturday vs. Duke remains a mystery that won't be revealed until game time, according to head coach Tommy Bowden. But he did offer at least a look at how the decision might me made.
"(Offensive coordinator) Rob (Spence) said he usually feels comfortable starting the guy who took between 65 and 75 percent of the (first team) snaps during the week," Bowden said following Thursday's workout.
Which guy that is remains to be seen. But this much is certain.
After the coaches evaluation Thursday night, and nearly 48 hours of rest before the game on Saturday, Whitehurst will start if the staff - most notably Spence - feels he received enough game preparation. Whitehurst practiced this week despite the sore right (throwing) shoulder, but no one will say how much.
If he can't go, Bowden has no qualms about starting Proctor, even if the redshirt junior had a breakout game against the Blue Devils which, unintentionally, might start a quarterback controversy.
"There'd be no controversy within the team," Bowden said. "Within the team it would be 'Look, here's another guy who can really play if we need him.' There would be a great comfort level there. I would hope it would be that way with the fans, too."
In other injury/position news:
- Freshman running back James Davis (wrist) is listed as probable to play Saturday;
- Long-snapper Nic Riddle (shoulder) should be good to go for his field goal and extra point duties;
- Cory Groover will start at nose tackle.
Due to the Noon start of the Clemson/Florida State football game the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' Bowden Breakfast has been rescheduled for Saturday, DECEMBER 10 at the Palmetto Expo Center.
