CLEMSON -- This week Clemson received another commitment for 2004 from offensive lineman Taylor Tremel (6-4, 260) of Lake Mary, Fl.
What made you commit now?
I think my recruiting coach. Coach Swinney is a really good guy, and a lot of the schools that were recruiting me didn’t further the relationship like he did. He’s an easy guy to talk to. When I went up to visit them after they offered me a scholarship, I related to their program and the way it’s working. I liked Coach West the o-line coach. The facilities are great, and it’s a beautiful place up there. It would just be dumb for me not to commit to Clemson.
What other schools were recruiting you?
South Florida, Southern Mississippi, Ole Miss, and Alabama.
From UCF. Ole Miss and Southern Mississippi acted like they were going to offer me, but they didn’t. Clemson just jumped on it and offered me. That’s what really got me to commit to them. Plus they’re a better school than the other schools that offered me.
Followed any school growing up?
I guess Florida because my dad went to Florida. Even if Florida offered me and it was between Florida and Clemson I would pick Clemson because
it’s a nicer place. The class sizes are a lot lower.
When have you visited Clemson?
I did a one day camp. That was my first visit there. I’m going to go up there on the 19th. They’re having Bobby Hutchinson the center up there I think. He’s going to go up and I’m going up too.
When did Clemson first make contact with you?
I guess it was around the end of the school year. It was a couple of
months ago. He (Swinney) came down like a couple of days before we actually
started practicing. He saw all my films. Clemson is the only school that didn’t send me one of those application things. They’re the only school that didn’t send me one, and they’re the best school that offered me a scholarship.
Current height and weight?
Current bench press?
Where do they see you fitting in?
Probably at tackle on the oline. I play tackle right now. I’ll play anywhere. Tackle is where I feel the most comfortable.
Do you play other sports?
Track and weight lifting. Shot put and discus.
Everything look ok with the academics?
Yeah. I got a 1050 on the SAT.
What are your strengths as a tackle?
I guess pass blocking. I’ve never given up a sack. But I think I’m fine at run blocking.
What do you need to work on?
I guess the thing I need to work on most especially since everyone is so much larger in college is to get all my plays down pat. And my technique. Just the smaller things I guess.
What have you been doing this summer?
We’re doing a hard summer conditioning. Start running about 4 p.m. I have been putting on a pound a week. I am about 262 right now and I want to be 270 to 275 when the season starts. I started last season at 230 to 236 and ended the season at 219. But this past spring I stayed at 260 so I’m feeling pretty good about keeping the weight on.
Any other camps this summer?
No other camps. The other camps I would go to would be if I was
interested in that school.
When did you start playing football?
I started my freshman year of high school. I played defensive line my freshman and sophomore year and moved to oline my junior year.
