CLEMSON -- Despite reportedly guaranteeing the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl that Tommy Bowden would be coach of the bowl game, Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips has yet to finish negotiating a contract extension with the Tigers' head coach. However, Philips said he is confident that they will get the matter resolved.

“We are working with Tommy’s attorney, and we are moving as quickly as we can,” said Phillips. “We needed to do some fact finding as to what is happening nationally so we can put things in perceptive.

“I feel very good about where we are. We just got to work on some issues and move forward.”

Bowden on the other hand would not characterize the state of the negotiations after the Peach Bowl press conference. Instead he repeatedly answered or referred all questions on the subject with the same statement.

"I wish it had been worked out before I left today but it has not."

Bowden is leaving for Florida for the Thanksgiving holidays and is expected back on Sunday. He has four years left on a contract that pays him at least $1.1 million a year.

Phillips downplayed reports of a strained relationship between himself and Bowden.
“We have a professional working relationship. I very much respect Coach Bowden as a person and a coach.”

Some insight may have been seen into the negotiations during the Peach Bowl press conference when Peach Bowl President Gary Stokan suggested Bowden could use the money from an up coming contract to buy Clemson’s allotment of Peach Bowl tickets. Bowden said in jest that his contract was a “sore subject”.
