CLEMSON – The Clemson Tigers were back at work on Monday, the first practice since Saturday’s mistake-filled scrimmage by the offense, and head coach Dabo Swinney said the scrimmage didn’t look any better after watching it on tape.

“It was about like we thought,” Swinney said of the game tape. “We made a lot of mistakes on offense. It was really nothing in particular. We were just not smooth and fluid, and consistent with our cadence and things like that. On offense, if one guy is wrong, it messes the whole thing up, and that was the story of the day on Saturday.”

Swinney did say, however, that there were some bright spots, especially with some of the younger offensive linemen that were thrown into the mix.

“We also did some good things. Brandon Thomas [redshirt freshman OT] got better Saturday from the first scrimmage,” Swinney said. “Same thing for [RS Jr. OT] Phillip Price – the arrow beside his name keeps going up. We are getting a little more confidence in him. And another guy that keeps getting better – he’s not ready to play yet – but he’s catching my eye, is [FR. OL] Kalon Davis.

“He’s smart, and he’s taking advantage of reps that he would probably not normally be getting right now. But he is smart, and he keeps showing us that he might have a chance of helping us this fall. He just needs a great summer to get where he needs to be. I am pleased with him.”

Swinney then said the defense was “dominant.”

“Defensively, we played with a ton of energy,” he said. “And effort. We weren’t perfect on that side of the ball, but I thought they were pretty dominant, just like I saw live.”

Swinney said that offense regrouped on Monday, and he was pleased with the way the group responded during the two-hour practice.

“I thought they got better today,” he said. “The guys came back ready to work, and I was pleased with their demeanor. We have a very competitive group right now, and we’ve got the offense and the defense working against each other, and they are battling. The offense has had some good days, and the defense has had their share. But the offense came in and had a good day today.”

Parker to have MRI on sore back

*Swinney said that quarterback Kyle Parker, who missed the last two games of the Boston College series in baseball and also missed Saturday’s scrimmage, will have a “precautionary” MRI tonight on his back, just to make sure there is no structural damage. Swinney said that Parker wanted to practice on Monday, but he was held out as a precaution. “I hope he can practice on Wednesday and play in the game on Saturday. That is the plan. This is something has been kind of lingering, and he feels it swinging and throwing. He was not getting better, so we decided to rest it and put him on some medication, and he said today that he felt better and felt the medicine kicking in. We are just being precautionary on it, and hopefully we’ll have a good report and he can play ball tomorrow night.”
