Offense Dominates on Last Day of Two-A-Days

CLEMSON - It took until the last day of two-a-days, but Tuesday Clemson's
defense looked eerily like the unit that gave up yardage in huge chunks last
season.

In their second full-scale scrimmage at Death Valley since Saturday, the
Tigers' offense came up with four touchdown passes and at least two rushing
touchdowns against the defense. One of the scoring passes was a 50-yard bomb
from Willie Simmons to freshman Kelvin Grant. Grant had one other
long-yardage catch, and Kevin Youngblood scored on a 17-yard reception.

Simmons and Charlie Whitehurst each threw two TD passes, and Chad Jasmin had
a pair of scoring runs in short-yardage situations.

"I won't know if there were alignment problems until I look at the film,"
head coach Tommy Bowden said. "But I know we gave up some big plays and there
were some missed tackles. We haven't had that problem really in the spring or
the fall, until today.

"The effort of defense just didn't seem to be there today."

One player who did provide a standout effort was Youngblood.

In his first practice since spraining his foot during the second workout of
prefall camp, Youngblood "looked good," according to Bowden. His 17-yard
touchdown catch was highlighted by Youngblood bowling over a defender at the
goal line to get the score.

After saying Saturday the junior wide receiver was likely out of the game
plan for the Aug. 31 season-opener due to missed time, Bowden seemed to
backtrack slightly Tuesday.

"He's not back yet, but he looked all right," Bowden said. "I don't know how
many plays he went (Tuesday). We'll have to look at the film. Usually on
offense we'll get 70-80 plays in a game. If he only went 20 plays today, then
no. But if he went 40-50, then maybe he's got a shot."

NOTES

- Kicker Aaron Hunt connected on field goals of 49 and 45 yards.

- Defensive end Bryant McNeal forced the day's only turnover, forcing a bad
pitch on a first-and-10 option play.

"We've been working on the option in that situation," Bowden said.

- Linebacker David Dunham and defensive tackle Todd McClinton returned to
practice Tuesday. The jury remains out on Dunham, but McClinton likely won't
be part of the Georgia game plan, Bowden said.
