North Carolina Game Notes

CHAPEL HIll, NC -- Clemson failed to score in the first quarter, just the third quarter this season that Clemson failed to score. Clemson didn't score in the fourth quarter against the Citadel and the fourth quarter against Virginia.

Overall, it was a miserable first quarter for Clemson. Not only did North Carolina outscore Clemson 10-0, the Tar Heels also outgained the Tigers 149-48 in total yards. Thirty of Clemson's yards came on one play, a pass completion from Woody Dantzler to Rod Gardner.

+ Clemson wore white jerseys with white pants for the first time since a game at Duke in 1998. When Tommy Bowden arrived, he changed the road attire to include orange pants, but a vote by the seniors changed the pants from orange to white for Saturday's game.

+ Big plays by the continued to plague the Clemson defense. North Carolina assaulted the Clemson defensive backfield in the first quarter. Ronald Curry completed two passes over 50 yards and another for 31 yards in the quarter.
Curry completed a 57-yard pass to freshman Jamal Jones on the first play of UNC's third drive. Curry completed a 57-yard pass to Sam Aiken early in the second quarter. Aiken lined up with two other wide receivers in a stack to the right side. He emerged from the stack 15 yards downfield and was open for ten yards before Curry saw him. He caught the pass from Curry and was finally caught by Robert Carswell at the Clemson 6-yard line.

Curry completed a 31-yard pass to Kory Bailey on UNC's second drive. Curry scrambled to his right and found Bailey open deep in Clemson territory.

+ Clemson's punter Jamie Somaini continued to have his problems. He came into the game averaging 38.6 yards a kick. He had a 51-yarder on his first punt, but then shanked his next punt for 19 yards.

Rod Gardner set a Clemson record for reception yards and tied the touchdown reception record. His 182 yards receiving broke the record of 163 set by Jerry Butler at Georgia Tech in 1977.

+ Willie Simmons tied the Clemson single-game record for touchdown passes with four. He tied the record of four set by Bobby Gage against Auburn in 1947 and Nealon Greene against UTEP in 1997. He is the first Clemson quarterback to come off the bench and throw that many touchdown passes.

+ Clemson now has eight straight games of at least 31 points and 400 yards of total offense. However, UNC held Clemson to a season-low 112 yards rushing and a season-low of 408 total yards.

+ Keith Adams had his first career interception and returned it 27 yards. Adams also had two tackles for loss, his 20th straight game with at least one tackle for loss, a Clemson record.

+ Jackie Robinson had a career high four receptions for 76 yards receiving.

+ Travis Zachery scored his 31st career rushing touchdown, tying him with Lester Brown for the Clemson career record. Zachery also became Clemson's career leader in receptions by a running back. He now has 47.
