Roscoe Crosby will not play because of this hit against Wofford.

CLEMSON - After hedging for most of the week, Tommy Bowden finally made it official Thursday when he announced that freshman wide receiver Roscoe Crosby would not play Saturday against Virginia.

Crosby suffered a sprain and a bone bruise in his left knee in the opening series against Wofford two weeks ago, and would have missed last Saturday's Duke game had it not been postponed.

Now, it appears his return is ticketed for next week's game at Georgia Tech.

"He's getting better," Bowden said. "He did some running on the side today, but he's not quite ready to go yet."

Asked if Crosby would play if it were later in the season with more on the line, Bowden laughed.

"No no. If he could go he'd be in there," he said. "I don't believe in saving anything for the next guy. I'd play him if he could play."

In other injury news:

- Sophomore running back Keith Kelly, whom Bowden hopes to redshirt, won't be available Saturday because of a sprained knee suffered during practice this week.

Backup tailback Bernard Rambert was in a yellow jersey (injury) for much of the week's practice, but should be ready to play Saturday.

- The virus which attacked several members of the team earlier in the week has apparently run its course.

"Apparently it was just the 24-hour kind," Bowden said. "Everybody's fine now."

- Defensive lineman Nick Eason will play, as expected, two days after undergoing a root canal.
