Meredith gets the Clemson offer he has been waiting on

CLEMSON – Longtime Clemson fan Justin Meredith was touring the WestZone last Saturday when he was told that Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney wanted to see him in his office.

Meredith knew he was about to get the news he wanted to hear.

The junior tight end out of Anderson’s T.L. Hanna High School is a lifelong Clemson fan, and despite offers from several other schools, there was one he had been waiting on.

Meredith was on campus for an official visit as part of Clemson’s Junior Day.

“We went to the Virginia Tech basketball game, and right after that they told me that Coach Swinney wanted to see me in his office,” Meredith said. “I knew then that he was going to offer. He told me how they evaluate prospects, and how they look at film. He said it goes through all the coaches before they offer. He said that everyone on the staff was impressed with my film and they wanted to offer me a scholarship.”

The head coach then wanted to know what Meredith’s thoughts were.

“I told him I was excited, and he knew I was a Clemson fan,” he said. “He asked what was going through my mind as far as making a decision, and I told him that right now I am not ready to make a decision. I might wait a couple of more months, and he said he completely understood. He said he doesn’t want me to commit somewhere I am not ready to commit to.”

Along with Clemson, Meredith has offers from Auburn, Cincinnati, Duke, Florida, LSU, Maryland, UNC, N.C. State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Wake Forest. He plans on taking an official visit to Auburn on March 26th.

One of the things Meredith wanted to accomplish on his visit was the opportunity to sit down with new offensive coordinator Chad Morris, but a miscommunication spoiled the chance.

“We spoke in Coach Swinney’s office for about five minutes, but then I ended up leaving,” he said. “They told us we could leave, and he wanted me to stay so we could break down film together. We are going to meet back up some other time. I might go to the scrimmage this Saturday or the next Saturday and sit down with him.”

Despite knowing more about Clemson than many other recruits, Meredith said there was one thing that really impressed him during his visit.

“The new offensive coaching staff is great,” he said. “I got to talk to Coach Morris, and even coach Tony Elliott, the running backs coach. I used to go to the Furman football camp when I was younger, so I have known him for a long time. I didn’t realize he was at Clemson until he came up and shook my hand. I asked him what he was doing there, and he told me he was the new running backs coach. I think that offensive staff impressed me the most. They are a great group of guys.”
