CLEMSON, SC -- He's a headline writer's dream - Joe Bever, as in "Leave it to Bever."

It's not clear, however, after one day of spring practice how quickly Bever will be making headlines at Clemson.

Bever was the one surprise at spring practice Saturday. He made his first appearance as Clemson's fourth-string quarterback.

Bever graduated from Evergreen High School in Vancouver, Washington in 1999. He had attended the Bowden Academy and followed Tommy Bowden at Tulane, but waited too late to submit his application to Clemson in order to attend during the fall.

"I was probably going to Tulane had they not come here," he said Saturday.

Bever completed 74 of 138 passes for 902 yards during his senior year at Evergreen, leading the team to an 8-2 record. He hurt his shoulder in the seventh game of the season and saw limited action after that.

He's a walk-on at Clemson after turning down some Division 1-AA offers.

"My junior year I wrote a bunch of schools," he said. "I kept in contact with coach Rod and went to the Bowden Academy and met him there. They kept in contact with me at Tulane."

Bever, wearing No. 12, showed a strong arm Saturday, overthrowing one receiver on a deep pattern.

He said he is waiting on the compliance office to determine if he will be classified as a freshman or sophomore this fall.
