Last-Second Kick Sinks Tigers, 16-13

by -

Clemson ran into two old enemies Saturday – turnovers and the Duke Blue Devils.

The Tigers turned the ball over four times as they lost to Duke for the fourth time in eight trips to Durham.

Duke’s Matt Brooks lofted a 52-yard field goal over the crossbar as time expired to give the Blue Devils a 16-13 win.

“Special teams didn’t show up, the offense didn’t show up,” said Clemson coach Tommy Bowden. “The fans showed up and the defense showed up.”

The teams traded field goals in the first half and the game went into the fourth quarter tied 6-6. After Clemson went up 13-6 on a 4-yard run by Reggie Merriweather, it appeared that the Clemson defense would allow the Tigers to sneak out of Durham with a win. However, the Blue Devils went to the air and scored a touchdown to tie the game with 1:21 left.

That appeared to give the Tigers enough time to drive for a last second fieldgoal. However, Duke turned the tables on the Tigers after intercepting a Charlie Whitehurst pass near midfield with a minute left.

Duke’s game-winning field goal sent the crowd into a frenzy that resulted in one of the goal posts being torn down nearly 20 minutes after the game.

The Tigers, a week after upsetting Miami, were left wondering how to the game got away.

“It’s as bad a loss as you can have,” said Whitehurst.

The loss forces Clemson (5-5) into a must-win against rival South Carolina if the Tigers want to go to a bowl this season.
