James Davis Has Surgery on Wrist

CLEMSON – On Friday, true freshman running back James had surgery on the fractured left wrist he suffered at the start of the second half against NC State. According to Clemson sports information director Tim Bourret, Davis is expected to be out three to four weeks. Initially, it was thought Davis might only be required to miss the next game against Temple.

Davis ran for 143 yards on 12 attempts and scored 2 touchdowns against N.C. State’s vaunted defensive line.

"That's the most productive we have been running the ball since I have been here," said Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden. "So we are going to miss that. I don't think it will affect the line. Reggie (Merriweather) has had some pretty productive games and so has Kyle (Browning)."

The rushing total was the most by a Clemson player since Woody Dantzler had 184 yards rushing at NC State on October 13, 2001, four years to the day prior to Davis's performance. His 143 yards were the most by a Clemson running back since Travis Zachery had 151 yards against Maryland in 2000.

Davis's rushing total was the fifth highest in Clemson history for a freshman. He now has 433 yards in 84 attempts this

year, 5.15 average. His four touchdowns are tied for the team lead

with wide receiver Curtis Baham.

Bowden said he might look at true freshman Demerick Chancellor for some playing time. The Tigers will also consider moving former running back Duane Coleman back to offense.

"We will have to get a third

tailback ready," said Bowden. "We will have a personnel meeting over the weekend to determine what we will do in that regard until James returns."
