CLEMSON - Though his status won't be known until Wednesday, Tommy Bowden
certainly sounded like a man resigned to playing without running back Bernard
Rambert this weekend.

Rambert left last Saturday's 22-17 loss at Virginia during the second quarter
with what was diagnosed as bruised ribs. Initial X-rays showed no breaks in
the rib area, but was worried Rambert might have suffered torn cartilage.

Whether or not that proves to be the case, Rambert officially is listed as
questionable for this Saturday's game with visiting Wake Forest. He didn't
practice Monday, and his status won't be known until at least Wednesday.

Rambert's latest injury comes on the heels of a battle with tendonitis in his
foot earlier this season which caused him to miss three games.

"I kind of feel sorry for him," Bowden said. "He's a senior and has invested
so much time, and had waited his turn here. He's worked so hard and does
everything you're supposed to do, and to go through what he's been through is
a shame."

If he can't play the focus again turns to Yusef Kelly, who averaged 95
rushing yards per game the last time Rambert was out. Redshirt freshman Tye
Hill, who scored on a 32-yard run late in the first half at Virginia, also
would get more carries.

"We're working with Tye, and we want to get (fullback) Chad (Jasmin) as
healthy as possible," Bowden said. "Tye played as good a game as he's played,
and he's improving every time out. So we'll go with him, Chad, Kyle
Browning...on down the line."

Meanwhile, offensive left tackle Gary Byrd also is listed as questionable for
Wake Forest with a sprained knee and ankle. Byrd missed the fourth quarter of
the Virginia game and also was held out of practice Monday.

His status is expected to be updated Wednesday, as well.
