In-state Recruiting Battles Taking Shape

by -

Our look at how the in-state recruiting battles are going this year so far. Prospects' state rankings are by Mickey Plyler.

1. RB Demetris Summers 6-1 200 Lexington

Comments: In some ways it was a victory for Clemson just to get Summers to visit on January 24th , and most feel he came out of the visit still a USC lean. In a recent chat session, Mickey Plyler ranked Clemson’s chances with Summers at 15%, and we think he was probably being generous with that.

2. OL Eric Young 6-6 270 Union

Comments: Young shocked a lot of people with his commitment to Tennessee this past weekend mostly because he had maintained it was an in-state battle for the last few months. He has since backed off the commitment slightly, but it appears Tennessee has really made an impression on him. This one will go down to the wire, but Clemson will have a great shot because of super recruiter Rick Stockstill. Here is what Young said about having to tell Stockstill of his commitment to Tennessee- “I don't know how I am going to tell Stock (Rick Stockstill). He has got to be the best recruiter in the world. I have developed a great friendship with him." Stay tuned.

3. QB Syvelle Newton 6-2 212 Marlboro Co

Comments: Newton will visit Vanderbilt this weekend. He wants to give the Commodores a shot after their head coach took a chance on his brother when the coach was at Furman. Still it appears Newton is the Gamecocks to lose. He has repeatedly mentioned that South Carolina was the first offer, and that is big to him. If best friend Tymere Zimmerman had made it in Clemson, the Tigers would probably have a better chance. However, Rick Stockstill is recruiting Newton so you never know.

4. LB Marcus Howard 6-2 210 Hanahan

Comments: J.J. Howard’s little brother is going to Georgia? Right now it appears he is. However, Clemson has never stopped recruiting him. Howard says he is getting calls from his brother and other recruits talking up Clemson. The Tigers need linebackers, so turning Howard back to Clemson would be huge.

5. WR Noah Whiteside 6-0 175 Greenville

Comments: Whiteside recently committed to the Gamecocks for the second time. Clemson continues to recruit him, but it appears it’s all but over.

6. DL Anthony McDaniel 6-6 265 Columbia

Comments: Clemson commitment McDaniel took a visit to South Carolina last weekend. Although we have not seen any comments from McDaniel himself, it appears his commitment is a little shaky now. Tennessee has really come into the picture as of late. McDaniel was leaning to the Tigers for a long time before he committed, and we think he will eventually be a Tiger.

7. LB Maurice Nelson 6-2 205 Crestwood

Comments: Solid Clemson commitment.

8. OL Marion Dukes 6-4 290 Pickens

Comments: Solid Clemson Commitment

9. RB Rodney Kinlaw 5-10 180 Stratford

Comments: Recently Kinlaw pulled the plug on the Tigers. Virginia Tech and Penn State will now battle for his services, and we are going to go with the Hokies on this one. Kinlaw camped there this summer, and his sister currently attends college there.

10. RB Tramaine Billie 6-1 190 Dreher

Comments: Solid Clemson commitment and former USC commitment.

11. WR Terrell Allen 6-0 185 Byrnes

Comments: Allen appears to be a solid Pittsburgh commitment. He has family up north and that looks like it was a big deciding factor.

12. LB Ryan Brown 6-2 240 Berkeley

Comments: Brown is the enigma in South Carolina this year. Some people rank Brown very high and others not so much. We do know he has had two severe injuries to the same ankle and one injury cost him almost a whole season. As it stands now, South Carolina and Florida will battle it out for Brown. What makes it interesting is former USC defensive coordinator Charlie Strong is now at Florida recruiting Brown away from South Carolina. We think South Carolina should still hold on. Clemson is currently not showing the interest that Florida and South Carolina have in Brown.

13. LB Tray Rodgers 6-1 205 Irmo

Comments: Solid USC Commitment

14. ATH Sergio Gilliam 6-3 175 Greer

Comments: Solid Clemson Commitment

15. WR David Smith 6-4 185 Union

Comments: Solid USC Commitment

16. DB Ty Erving, 5-11 175 Batesburg-Leesville

Comments: Solid USC Commitment

17. DB Jonathan Hefney 6-0 180 Rock Hill

Comments: Hefney is not getting too much interest from Clemson or South Carolina right now. He says he is scheduled to take a visit to Tennessee soon though.

18. QB Eric McCollum 6-0 175 Camden

Comments: Solid Iowa Commitment. South Carolina’s “Mr. Football” did not receive much interest from Southern schools.

19. K Jad Dean 5-11 190 Greenwood

Comments: Solid Clemson Commitment

20. LB Curtis Rice 6-2 205 Union

Comments: Rice had some impressive stats at Union this season with 99 tackles, 14 sacks and 33 tackles for loss. College coaches do not offer based on stats, however, and Rice has yet to receive an offer from a division one school. He has visited Clemson and will visit South Carolina this weekend. The first school to offer Rice will probably get him, and it could be South Carolina this weekend.
