On preparation for South Carolina:

"Usually, the attention span at practice is pretty good. I really feel like one of the most difficult things as a college coach is motivating from week to week. Getting your players to peak at the right time. For the Florida State game, motivation was not an issue. For the Duke game, motivation was an issue. For South Carolina, motivation won't be an issue. Our practices today, tomorrow, and Thursday will be a lot more intense and detailed than what it was last night. But again, I'll have a better feel for our preparation at that point in time."

On facing Lou Holtz for the fifth time:

"When you look at the win-loss record of college football coaches in history, he ranks up there as one of the highest. Obviously there's a reason for that. His teams are always well prepared. He's a good recruiter, because he's got good players. When you beat a coach who has won a National Championship, you know you're competing against one of the best. They're well organized, and they always have a good scheme."

On the maturation of Charlie Whitehurst:

"I think last year's game against South Carolina helped him a lot in that regard. The fact that it's a televised game with a lot of electricity in the air, and that there's a lot on the line. The media attention leading up to the game will be greater. His name will be mentioned a lot more this week than in previous weeks. He's had a tremendous background of being raised to deal with all that stuff. Mike O'Cain, obviously being an ex-quarterback, has also helped him. Between his father and Mike O'Cain, I think he's gotten excellent tutelage on how to handle all the pre-game hype."

On player feelings of the rivalry game:

"I think they do get more excited because they know a lot of the players and competed against a lot of their players in high school. Another reason would be that they read about it every day of the year. If they don't read about it, they hear about it in some form or fashion every day of the year. I think it makes the game more significant. They're around that 365 days per year. And I think that is what gets out-of-state players into the rivalry in their first year here
