Help is on the way from Hargrave

Hargrave Military Academy head coach Troy Davis said on Tuesday that he has a couple of players on his roster that he has no doubt will play in the NFL one day – after a stop at Clemson University.

Wide receiver Martavis Bryant and defensive end Corey Crawford were both a part of Clemson’s 2010 recruiting class, but needed to spend a year at Hargrave in order to get their academics settled. Both played for Davis this past season, and will hopefully be ready to suit up as Tigers in 2011.

Bryant ended the eight-game season with 20 catches for 510 yards, and eight of his grabs went for touchdowns, and Davis said that Bryant will make an impact for the Tigers next fall.

“Really, all he needs to work on is the Clemson play book, and being consistent on his routes,” Davis said. “If he emphasizes the little things, and works on his technique, he will be a good one. In the way he plays, he reminds me of [former Hargrave player] Torry Holt. He has tremendous upside to him. He hasn’t gotten there yet.

“He is a well-mannered kid, with outstanding talent and ability on the football field. He is every bit a 5-star player. Clemson is definitely getting a big-time receiver, and the future is bright for him. He has the ability to catch the ball and the ability to run after he catches it. He has good hands – very strong hands.”

Crawford had an outstanding season as well at Hargrave, registering 42 tackles, eight tackles for loss, one interception and two blocked punts.

“Corey is a big-time defensive end with a lot of upside to him,” Davis said. “I think he will get to Clemson and see some playing time for the Tigers right away. He can rush the passer, and he can stop the run. It is just a matter of what Clemson wants him to do. He is very strong and plays with great leverage. He is a great pass rusher, and got better playing the run.”

Davis said both players with play on Sunday, saying that Crawford reminds him of another Hargrave NFL player –Charles Davis.

“Both of them will be NFL players,” he said. “I have no doubt that in four years they will both play in the NFL. They both have the physical ability, and they play the game the right way. They have been challenged here at Hargrave, and when they get to Clemson they just have to play and play within the system and take care of their academics.”

According to Davis, both players will enroll in Clemson in June.
