Dillon wide receiver Derrick Hamilton surprised his mother, Patty Hamilton,
when he decided football would be his future.

"I really thought he was going to stick to basketball," she said. "He's done
well in that."

Hamilton has done well in basketball, scoring 18 points a game this season
for Dillon High School. However, after he committed to Clemson in December,
there have been few surprises for Patty Hamilton.

Despite a late push by South Carolina, Hamilton said Sunday he will sign on
Wednesday with Clemson.

"There hasn't been too much pressure," he said. "No one else really came in
and tried to recruit me once I committed."

Tennessee was reportedly going to visit over the weekend, but never showed
up. South Carolina assistant Buddy Pough showed up, but he probably
shouldn't have wasted his time, according to Hamilton's mother.

"I really don't think he liked them at all," she said. "I don't know whether
it was the school or what."

By all indications, Hamilton never thought about wavering from his
commitment to Clemson. Just to be safe, Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden and
recruiting coordinator Rick Stockstill traveled to Dillon on Friday to watch
Hamilton play basketball.

Hamilton, who said he is fully qualified, and his coach Jackie Hayes both
said they expect the letter of intent to be signed around 8 a.m. at the high
school commons area.

"I feel one hundred percent sure he's going to Clemson," said Hayes. "He
feel like he fits in there and is hoping to make some positive strides
there."
