Gammons Report on Crosby Factually Inaccurate |
OMAHA, Neb. - A report by ESPN's Peter Gammons last weekend saying Clemson
wide receiver Roscoe Crosby was ineligible to play football for the Tigers is false, according to the school's sports information director. "All I can tell you is Roscoe is eligible to return to school if he wants to," Tim Bourret said Monday afternoon. He declined further comment, citing the privacy of student records. According to sources familiar with the situation, Crosby simply is in violation of the 24-hour rule, a rule that says a student athlete must complete 24 hours of academic course work to be eligible for his second season of competition. His grade point average is not an issue. Apparently it is not unusual for some athletes to come up short of those requirements during the regular school year, only to gain the necessary classes during one or both terms of summer school. Were Crosby so inclined he could enroll in summer school, gain the necessary credits, and be ready for football season come August. Crosby, who has been playing baseball this summer in the Kansas City Royals minor league system, apparently is in need of major surgery on his elbow, an injury that limited his action to designated hitting duties. If he has the surgery, Crosby will miss a full year of both sports while in rehabilitation. Rumors have circulated that Crosby has indeed already had the surgery, however Bourret could not confirm that fact and calls to the Royals' media relations department were not returned. Gammons' report erroneously stated that Crosby had already had the surgery and was back playing only as a DH.
