Friday Spring Practice News and Notes

Notes from Clemson spring practice:

- Don't expect Woody Dantzler to make an appearance in Saturday's 10 a.m.

scrimmage.

The senior quarterback has stepped up his workouts as he continues

recovering from off-season ankle surgery, but Clemson head coach Tommy

Bowden doesn't want to push his incumbent starter.

"You don't really want to take a chance that somebody rolls on his ankle

right now," he said. "So Willie (Simmons) will get all the reps at No. 1."

- Speaking of Simmons, Bowden said the sophomore has had a very productive

spring.

"He's getting better each day, and you like to see that improvement," said

the coach. "Wednesday was probably the best he's looked all spring."

He also had high praise for receivers Kevin Youngblood and Jackie Robinson,

and said the others need to "look out," an obvious reference to the talented

group of incoming freshmen expected this fall.

Incidentally, Youngblood finished practice Friday despite a gash in his arm

that Bowden expected to require at least five stitches.

"We spit on it, rubbed some dirt in it and told him he could get the

stitches after practice," Bowden joked.

- Bowden wasn't sure what type of format he's going to use for next

Saturday's annual Orange-White game, set for 3 p.m. at Death Valley.

"You don't really want to set something now, then have to change it because

of injuries or something," he said.

- Offensive tackle Gary Byrd is expected to miss the remainder of the

spring. Byrd dislocated his kneecap earlier this week.

- Will Merritt, T. J. Watkins, Kyle Young and Justin Watts all missed

Friday's practice for an unusual reason - Merritt is getting married.

Bowden shrugged off any thoughts he might be upset at the timing of the

senior's nuptials.

"I would in no way want to mess with that guy's wedding, with his wife and

then with his mom," Bowden joked. "You don't mess with them women around

weddings. I'm married. My wife had a wedding. You don't mess with them."

My eye in the sky tells me the Shrine Bowl, a fixture in Charlotte since the

1920's, will be moved out of the city this year.

Apparently a controversy has arisen between the six Shrine Temples which

form Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, Inc., the group which administrates the

game. My source says one of the temples is trying to gain total control of

the event, which obviously doesn't sit will with the other five.

With no settlement in sight, don't be surprised to see the game moved across

the border to Rock Hill.
