Friday Practice Report

by -

Clemson, SC — Clemson held a two-hour practice on Friday afternoon at the practice fields behind the Jervey Athletic Center. The Tigers are preparing for the season opener against Middle Tennessee on September 5. Clemson will continue practice on Saturday morning, then have the annual Fan Appreciation Day at Clemson Memorial Stadium Sunday from 3 to 5 PM.

There were actually two practices for the coaches on Friday. The varsity had its two-hour work out in full pads. Then at 6:15 PM, 39 Clemson students took part in walk-on tryouts. Coach Swinney and all nine assistant coaches watched as the students ran through various drills.

“We had 39 students come out today, it was a good turnout,” said Head Coach Dabo Swinney, who was a walk-on himself at the University of Alabama in 1989 before he earned a scholarship as a wide receiver. “We put them through some drills for about 35 minutes, then timed them in the 40. We have a lot original walk-ons already on this team. Walk-ons can help a program, especially when it comes to the scout team in terms of game preparation.”

Swinney talked about the right tackle position and the kicking situation after practice when he met with the media. “Cory Lambert had a good scrimmage on Tuesday and has had some good practices since. He has all the physical ability you need. We are just looking for some consistency. But, he has made a move the last few days.

“The kickers had a good day. I don’t believe Spencer Benton missed a kick and he did a really good job kicking off, kicking some into the end zone. Richard Jackson missed just one field goal. Both of these young men have ability. We are just looking for someone who can do it every day.”

The Tigers were in good shape physically on Friday. Brandon Maye, Brandon Clear and Jacoby Ford were all in green jerseys, so they went through some drills.
