Four Tigers Named to ACC All-Academic Football Team

by -

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Academic All-Americans Kyle Young and Chad Carson led four Clemson players on the Academic All-ACC football team announced by Commissioner John Swofford on Tuesday. To be eligible, a player must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the fall semester or have maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. Joining Young and Carson on the team were offensive guard Will Merritt and linebacker Braxton K. Williams.

Young and Carson were named for the second year in a row, while it was the first time selection for Merritt and Williams. All four players will return to the Tiger team in 2001. Clemson, Florida State and Maryland all led the way with four selections each. Young and Merritt were two of eight players on the academic team who were first or second-team All-ACC on the field.

Young was named a first-team academic All-American in 2000, his second straight year on that team. Next year the All-America Clemson center will have a chance to become just the second ACC player in history and just the second offensive lineman in college football history to be named a first-team Academic All-American three consecutive years. Carson was named a first-team Academic All-American this past year in addition to leading the Tigers in tackles with 146. He ranked fourth in the nation in that category.
