First-Year Players Report at Clemson |
Clemson, SC-Clemson Head Coach Tommy Bowden welcomed 18 signees to
campus on Sunday afternoon. Monday will be a day of academic meetings, then the Tiger rookies will open practice on Tuesday at 10:00 AM. The new players will also practice at 4:45 PM on Tuesday. They will have two more practices on Wednesday. The four practices for the freshmen will be held on the practice fields behind the Jervey Athletic Center and will be open to the public. The Clemson varsity reports on the evening of August 7th and the first day of practice for the entire squad will take place on the morning of August 9th. Once the varsity reports, the practices will be closed to the public. The team will hold its annual Fan Appreciation Day under the South Stands (Press box side) at Clemson Memorial Stadium on Sunday, August 11 at 3:00 PM. The season opener is August 31 at Georgia at 7:45 PM. Four of the 22 Clemson signees announced previously will report to Clemson upon their approval from the NCAA Clearinghouse. All are expected to attend Clemson. "This is a large class of incoming freshmen, the second straight year we have had a large group report," said Bowden, who still has 22 of the 23 signees from last year in his program. "We expect to see the players who are detained by the NCAA Clearinghouse arrive at school shortly. "I am anxious to see this group in action. We might not have as many first-year freshmen contribute immediately as we did last year when many of them were starters or at least second-team players early in the season. But, in every class you have some surprises. I am looking forward to seeing them on the practice fields on Tuesday. They look to be in good physical condition." Last year the freshmen began practice the day after they reported. But this year the freshmen will spend Monday in academic meetings and won't put on a football uniform on until Tuesday. "These (meetings) are very important, we want to get everyone on the right foot academically," said Bowden. "We have had great success in that area in terms of team GPA, academic honor roll recipients and players earning their degree the last three years. We certainly want that to continue." Eighteen of the 22 seniors on the 2001 Clemson team already have their degrees and more should join them this year. 2002 Clemson Signees who reported, Sunday, August 4th:
