CLEMSON FOOTBALL

Doyel Defends Column on Dan Scott Show

by -

In the Tuesday’s Charlotte Observer a column ran that was entitled “Clemson football: Big myth” by Gregg Doyel. The premise of the article was Clemson is not a football school.

As you might expect it has been a hot topic on TigerNet’s message board and on the radio air waves.

Some examples of responses to Doyle found on TigerNet:

Doyle was a guest on Dan Scott’s radio show “Sports Talk” (WCCP 104.9 FM, 10-12PM weekdays) on Wednesday to defend his commentary and take some calls from Clemson fans. Below is the audio from that segment of the show.

Quotes from Doyel:

”The last twenty-four hours have been hectic. I have had 600 or maybe more emails and I am not exaggerating. Two-thirds are Clemson fans killing me. And maybe one-third are South Carolina fans patting me on the back. Honestly that bothers me more than Clemson fans killing me because there is some sort of implication that hey you did this for us and you are on our team. I don’t mean to put down Carolina fans but I’m not on anybody’s team. I just had a feeling on something and I wrote it.”

“Clemson is a football school. Let me say that. I used the wrong words. I know I am going to take some cannon fodder away from a lot of callers maybe even you guys. I guess I should have defined my term football season. What I meant was they are not a nationally elite football program. They are not a place that should expect to win nine or ten games a year. But they obviously have 80,000 people filling the stadium. There is a lot of passion there. I didn’t mean that. I just meant Clemson is not that good in football. Let’s have some realism here. “
