Discover Orange Bowl ticket sales slower than expected |
CLEMSON – Ticket sales for the Discover Orange Bowl are going slower than many expected, according to Clemson ticket manager Travis Furbee.
Clemson has sold just shy of 8,000 of its 17,500 allotment as of Tuesday morning, and that includes the various groups such as the band, player guests and support staff. West Virginia said that it had sold just 5,700 as of earlier this week. Furbee said the fact that the bowl game is being played mid-week – already three days after the New Year holiday, has probably hurt sales. People take time off for Christmas and New Year, and then many can't find the time to take the extra week that attending the Orange Bowl would entail, assuming that the Thursday after the bowl game would be a travel day. In the past, the Orange Bowl was played on New Year’s Day – as were the Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl and later the Fiesta Bowl – but recent BCS tie-ins have caused the networks to spread the bowl season into almost a month of games. This year, the first bowl is actually this week, with three lower-tier bowls kicking off this Saturday. The Fiesta Bowl and Rose Bowl will each play on January 2nd – along with the TicketCity Bowl, the Capital One Bowl and the Gator Bowl. The Sugar Bowl will be played on Tuesday, January 3rd, followed by the Clemson and West Virginia matchup in Miami on Wednesday, January 4th. The Cotton Bowl plays two days later, and two relatively meaningless games [The GoDaddy.com Bowl and the BBVA Compass Bowl] will be played on that Saturday and Sunday, and then there is the rematch between LSU and Alabama finally kicking off on January 9th.
