Dantzler, Young Named All-American by Football News

by -

Clemson, SC-Clemson's quarterback and center combination of Woodrow

Dantzler and Kyle Young were both named to The Football News

preseason All-America teams on Thursday. The publication that has

existed since 1939 named Dantzler its first-team All-America

quarterback, while Young was named the second-team center.

It was the second publication to name Dantzler as its

first-team All-American at quarterback for the preseason. Lindy's

listed Dantzler as its first-team quarterback and top candidate for

the Davey O'Brien Award earlier this summer. For Young it was his

fourth preseason All-America selection. The native of Clemson who

graduated Summa Cum Laude from Clemson in May was a second-team

selection by Street & Smith and a third team choice by Athlon and

collegefootballnews.com.

In addition to Dantzler and Young, tailback Travis Zachery,

offensive guard Will Merritt and linebacker Chad Carson all made the

Football News preseason All-ACC team for 2001.

Dantzler and Young have been accustomed to receiving honors

since they were seniors in High School. In 1996, Young was named Mr.

Football in the state of South Carolina as a center from Daniel High

School. Dantzler, a quarterback at Orangeburg-Wilkinson, was second

in the voting for that honor. Last year, Young led the Tigers in

knock down blocks with a record 120, while Dantzler led the Tigers in

total offense with a record 2899 yards.

Both Dantzler and Young have received quite a few preseason

honors for 2001:
