Dantzler Takes Step Backward in Recovery

CLEMSON — Woody Dantzler's status for Saturday's game at Florida State may

have taken a step backward.

According to head coach Tommy Bowden, the junior quarterback's injured leg

regressed slightly from Wednesday to Thursday, leaving him less mobile at

Thursday's practice. Bowden said the decision will still be a game-time

decision, but sounded much less confident his Heisman Trophy candidate would

be ready to play.

"His shin is fine, but now (trainer) Danny (Poole) tells me there's something

wrong with the ankle," Bowden said. "If he hobbles in pregame like he did

today, he probably won't start."

Dantzler remained on the practice field and went through a series of

sprint-and-roll passing drills to test the left leg for Poole. The pair then

drove off the field and headed to the training room.

On the way through Dantzler told reporters, "I'm fine," and said he expected

to play Saturday.

But Bowden wasn't so sure, saying he thought Dantzler took a step back in his

recovery Thursday.

"That's what it looked like to me," he said. "That's not what I wanted to

see. If I get the answer Saturday that I got today, then no he won't (start)."

Notes:

— All three hobbled defensive linemen — Terry Jolly, Jason Holloman and Terry

Bryant — are listed as probable and expected to play Saturday.

— Asked what the Florida State version of the Braves Tomahawk Chop is called,

Bowden laughed.

"I don't know what they call it, but I know my mother thinks she invented

it," he said. "Ted Turner says he invented it, so does Ann Bowden. One of

them did."

— Asked what concerned him most about Saturday's game at Tallahassee, Bowden

suddenly turned serious.

"(I'm concerned) that it gets out of hand because of their talent," he said.

"They can embarrass you on national TV."

— Bowden may have provided a Freudian Slip, either intentional or purely

accidental, toward the end of his meeting with reporters.

Asked again about the Alabama job, Bowden said:

"I'm not going to contract, uhh...comment."
