Dantzler Listed Among Top Contenders for Heisman

Clemson, SC-Clemson quarterback Woodrow Dantzler is listed as the

number-two candidate for the 2001 Heisman Trophy according to two

preseason media outlets. The Tiger signal caller, who is slated to

graduate in August, is ranked second for the award by Lindy's

Preseason Magazine and by CBS Sportsline.com.

Lindy's also ranks Dantzler as the top quarterback in the

nation and as its first-team All-America quarterback. Dantzler's

starting center and classmate, Kyle Young, is ranked as the fourth

best center in the nation by the publication. Also from the

offensive line, Will Merritt is ranked seventh among guards in the

nation. It also lists Chad Carson as the nation's 15th best outside

linebacker and Travis Zachery as the country's 25th best running back.

Dantzler led the Tigers to a 9-3 record last year, Clemson's

best mark since the 1993 season. Clemson was ranked 14th in the

final USA Today poll, its highest final ranking since 1991. He set

16 Clemson records last year and now holds 19 overall in his Clemson

career. Last year, Dantzler completed 137 of 244 passes for 1871

yards and 11 scores. He also rushed for 1028 yards to lead the

Tigers, and scored 13 touchdowns. His 24 touchdowns rushing and

passing established a Clemson single season record. His rushing

yardage total was an ACC record for a single season.

He nearly became the first college football player in history

to pass for 2000 yards and rush for 1000 in the same season. He

played the equivalent nine games a year ago due to injury and large

scoring differentials. It is a realistic goal for a healthy

Dantzler in 2001.
