Dan Scott Prediction: Clemson vs. Central Michigan |
After two losses and a week off, I've been contemplating dusting off the ol' Magic Helmet. But before that, we'll give 'er another week or two before subjecting you to that mess again. CENTRAL MICHIGAN AT CLEMSON WHEN CLEMSON HAS THE BALL This should be a chance for the Tigers' offensive line to begin the road to recovery. If it does, watch for Clemson to rediscover the running game. The questions about Cullen Harper's ability to throw the ball have been answered. Now, if the Tigers are to recover at all and have a strong second half of the season, they must run the football effectively. Given the struggles of CMU's defense so far this year, this would seem to be a perfect opportunity to do so. ADVANTAGE - Clemson WHEN CENTRAL MICHIGAN HAS THE BALL Clemson's pass defense likely gets its most stern test Saturday. CMU will look a lot like Lousiana-Lafayette from a formation standpoint, but will throw the ball more often and usually with more results. After a slow start to the season Central's offense has found the range of late, putting up huge numbers. Of course, they haven't played a defense as good as Vic Koening's, either. Still, it will be interesting to see how the Tigers react to the multiple receiver sets. ADVANTAGE - Clemson SPECIAL TEAMS Still can't bring myself to judge the Tigers fairly in this category. Not until I see mistake-free performance. And CMU is top 15 in the country in kick return yardage. ADVANTAGE - None INTANGIBLES Were this just another game under the identical circumstances, I'd be worried. This could have been one of those 65,000, no atmosphere noon starts that seem to crop up once a year. The game is at noon, but it's also Homecoming. That should add to the attendance and the atmosphere. It better. Because I have a sneaking suspicion the Tigers may be flat early on. ADVANTAGE - Clemson BOTTOM LINE If you believe any game on the Tigers' schedule from this point is a sure victory, this would be your best bet. I'm not sure I would place any bet of such magnitude these days, but I do believe Clemson wins this game. Maybe not huge. But comfortably. THE PICK Clemson 35, Central Michigan 14
