Dan Scott: Clemson vs. Wake Forest Prediction |
Well, thanks to a couple of cupcakes the ol' Magic Helmet has a bit of momentum heading into this week. But this week provides a bigger challenge, for both me and the Tigers.
Clemson (4-1) at Wake Forest (5-0) When Clemson Has The Ball Clemson's offensive line will be working against an undersized Wake Forest defensive line. However the Deacs' defensive ends are quick and the linebackers, though not well known, are potentially as good as any in the league. Wake Forest has 17 sacks already and lead the ACC in scoring defense through five games. The loss of Chansi Stuckey will hurt the Clemson passing attack, no question. Fortunately, the offensive line should be equal to the task. ADVANTAGE - Clemson When Wake Forest Has The Ball The Demon Deacons are playing with backups at quarterback, tailback and left tackle, and yet haven't missed a beat. Their unique blocking style and misdirection/option-oriented attack has given Clemson fits in the past. But watch for Clemson, if it can control the run, to put significant pressure on Wake's young quarterback and see if he can hold up to the heat. ADVANTAGE - Clemson Special Teams The kickoff coverage problems popped up again last week, and Jad Dean had another kick blocked. Cole Chason's punting has been a pleasant surprise, but with the other problems cropping back up.... ADVANTAGE - Wake Forest Coaching Jim Grobe has been the bane of Tommy Bowden's existence since coming to Wake Forest. But this Clemson coaching staff has shown a great ability to adjust to adversity this season. ADVANTAGE - Even BOTTOM LINE A win here would validate Wake's 5-0 start, and goodness knows the Deacs have had Clemson's number the last two trips into Groves Stadium. However, this Clemson team is tougher mentally, and should come away with a victory. And just to make you feel better, I double-checked this pick with the kid. THE PICK Clemson 31, Wake Forest 14
