Notes from Swinney’s Weekly Press Conference

- Swinney said the Tigers had a great meeting and good practice yesterday. He feels the team responded the right way.

- “We took eight plays and looked at them as a football team. If we made 3 of them we win the game. Just trying to make sure the guys know when we have opportunity to win we have to make the play.”

- Swinney likes the way the Tiger are running the ball especially in the 4th quarter. 41 rushes for 213 yards in the 4th quarter which is over 5 yards a carry. “That’s winning football”

- Swinney feels like the tough schedule will pay off later in the season. Teams Clemson has played are a combined 12-3 with two of the losses coming to Clemson.

- Maryland is off to a slow start but Swinney knows Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen will have them ready to play. Swinney said the Tigers will get best Maryland’s best effort of the year because it’s a fresh start for them with this being their first conference game.

- Swinney said the Tigers need to have the killer instinct in the 4th quarter because both losses they have had the lead in the 4th quarter.

- On team goals: “The only thing we know about this team is we are not a national championship team. I don’t know how many first coaches have won a national championship but I wanted to be in that select group. But National championship teams make those plays. But I think we got a chance to be a really good team.”

- On losing the two games on the season: “I hate to lose. I can’t stand to lose. I don’t want to talk to anyone. I play pickup basketball from time to time and I hate to lose in that. I hate to lose at anything.”

- Swinney said the Tigers need more playmakers to emerge. Tight end Michael Palmer has made some plays but he needs to be more consistent. He thinks wide receiver Jaron Brown will eventually step up as another option for the Tigers.

- Running back C.J. Spiller has made a 60+ yard play in every game. “The guy is amazing.”

- On C.J. not being in the Heisman race so far: “We got to do our part. I wouldn’t trade anybody for him. He gives us a chance to win every week. It’s a long season.“

- On the offensive line after the first four games: “They are getting better and really improving…we are not perfect yet. We had some missed opportunities. We played without our best tackle and didn’t give up a sack. Are we a dominating team yet? No. But we are improving. “

- Swinney said the offensive line had 4 missed assignments against TCU including a big one on 4th and 1.

- On Willy Korn not getting to play in every game: “My intention is to play him in every game but sometimes the plan changes. Against Georgia Tech we were down 24-0 and we played the best guys and tried to win the game. Saturday it was a driving rain storm. It just wasn’t the right time to get him in there. But when he gets his opportunity he has to be productive. My intention is to play him this Saturday but circumstances could change that.”
